    Clinical Rotation Questions

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I have a few questions about third year rotations as I have just recently begun them:

    1) I've just started surgery rotation and would like to know what's the best way to study and which materials (books etc) should I be focusing on to do well in this rotation (feeling overwhelmed at the moment and I need to focus my studying efforts)?

    2) What kind of general books are recommended for, not only surgery, but for step 2 and other rotations?

    3) When is the best time to start preparing for step 2 and when is the best time to take step 2 within the 3rd year (additionally, how long should I sign up for the exam in advance)?

    4) Any general tips on rotations (things to keep in mind, important things to do, etc.)

I would appreciate any feedback on these matters from experienced students. Thanks.

Kgirl has a really good sticky in the SGU Clinicals section of the forum on books. You also might check through the other sticky in that section that's the general FAQ for clinical years, I'm sure some of the other questions are addressed in it.

i say relax, take a deep breath and enjoy your surgery rotation. try to scrub in and see and do as much as you can. I greatly enjoyed my surgery rotation. because you're fresh from step1 you should be able to answer a lot of q's but you should be getting assigned to surgeries the day before so when you go home you can read up on the anatomy and the complications of the surgery also the reason why the person is having surgery.

but mostly try to be helpful, and eager to learn and know when to ask for help and don't be afraid to say "I don't know, but i'll look it up." I would say that's the phrase that was most commonly used by me and my group during our 3rd year.

a good book to have for surgery is Surgical Recall, it might not seem like a good book but many of the questions in it are ask directly by attendings.

general books for step2 are kaplan books, or first aid, or any review books for step2..

Pick a good source and stick to it (I used Kaplan and UWORLD). All of 3rd year is USMLE CK study period. As a third year you will feel overwhelmed cause you don't know what is going on. And when you do start to get good at it, you have to change to another rotation.

Surgery sucks.. and even more so when you start it as your first rotation. The best part about that.. is all the other rotations will seem easy after that.

I second Surgical Recall. All the pimp questions anyone could reasonably get came from it, and it's relatively small, vs trying to haul Lawrence around with you.
