    Unaffiliated Electives in California

    Advertisements

Trying to schedule 4th year electives in California at unaffiliated hospitals. Some of the programs state directly that only students from LCME schools (US med schools) can rotate as a visiting student. Fine, whatever. This has been discussed in this forum.

But wait, some California programs have a protocol on their website for students from international medical schools. However, after contacting some of these schools, the program informed me that they won't take non-LCME students either. This one program even has a calendar for students from foreign schools with dates through May 2010. After inquiring, the response: "University of X does not accept students from non-LCME accredited off shore medical schools into the University of X Senior Elective Program. Best of Luck."

It has has been posted in this forum that some states require that a medical center have an affiliation with the medical school of the potential visiting student. Maybe this is the case too in California? Are there any California unaffiliated hospitals where our students can rotate? (If so, a simple "yes, keep looking" will suffice).

There are a couple of other programs from whom I have not received a reply. They too have an international protocol on their website, but the application timeline is still months away. Am I going to find the same thing from these programs, that we can't rotate there as visiting students? Essentially, I just don't want to give up opportunites for other electives for a false hope of an unaffiliated elective in California.

    Your input is much appreciated.

Also just wanted to note.... the overwhelming majority of these programs in California have been polite, courtious, and professional with me as they discussed their policy.
