    LOR question

    Advertisements

This might be a silly question but, does it make a difference when applying for residency if some of our LOR's come from DO's vs. MD's? Do the program directors view the application any different. The reason I am asking is that I have an attending who is an incredible teacher and really pushes us to learn the patients we round on and I was hoping to ask her for an LOR.

Thanks for any help on this

Short answer is: No, it doesn't matter. Try to have at least one from the specialty for which you are applying. It's not crucially important for everywhere, but some programs actually cite that as a requirement.

When should we ask for a LOR? Is it right after we finished any rotation, even if ERAS applications are 1 year away next September? We just finished a rotation next week.

you can ask for them whenever. right after the rotation is good, but most attendings won't write them till later on.

If you feel the rotation's going well, ask during the rotation. This will give them opportunity to observe you from a letter-writer's point of view. The actual letter doesn't get sent till after you're registered with ERAS. Don't worry, this is how it's supposed to be, every 3rd yr class goes through this. Your letter writer has dealt with this same situation many times before your time.
