What is your motivation in becoming a doctor?

    Advertisements

    Hi,

I was just wondering what are some of your motivation in becoming doctors. You will spend 4 years in medical school plus a minimum of 3 years doing residency. That is a total of 7 years. Then you'll be working close to 130 hour work weeks during residency. You will probably never see your family during that time.

What is your real motivation? I have heard so many. I heard helping people, but that is too broad. You can work for the peace crops and help people. Some peopel tell me money, but if you take a look at an entrepreneur they makes a lot more money than a doctor and if he ever takes his company public, he'll make much more.

Please share with me, what is your true motivation for becoming a doctor?

    Thanks

    Motivation

Regarding hours you should review the new 80 hour work week law, 130 is way off. Some programs are able to surpass the 80 hour work week by an additional 10% which is 88. I assume you are early in medical school or have yet to begin. A suppose every one has their own reason for entering medicine. I am sure common reasons are for money, or continuing the family tradition of becoming a doctor. I have to admit I did not have some defining moment or special reason to become a physician other than an interest in medicine and helping people. I beleive your motivations become more defined as you progress. Examples like delivering your first baby into the world, surgical removal of cancer, and helping a family understand their loved ones sickness are a couple of examples I have found rewarding.

It sounds like you are highly skeptical of others motivation and perhaps cannot find you're own.

    Motivation

    Good question.

I personally was drawn to the field after my moms experience with breast cancer. I attended every treatment session she had and the doctor/patient dynamic amazed me. Her oncologist had such a personal understanding and caring attitude. My mom is doing well and has been in remision for many years. I had the opportunity to shadow MDs all through high school and the majority of college which also helped me see that I would love to get into oncology for life work. I also liked the idea of having stable job security. My dad is in business and the market fluctuates so often that job security is not guranteed. Those were some of the driving forces which motivated me. What about everyone else?

    Hi Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

Does your dad have his own business or work for a major firm?
