    can I match for 2014?

    Advertisements

I am trying to get a rough idea of a timeline for myself while in med school. I am starting in Jan '11 and I made a rough guess that it will go something like this:
    Saba: Jan '11-Aug '12
    Step 1: Oct '12
    Apply for residency: Aug/Sept '13
    Clinicals: Oct '12-April '14
    Step 2's: April-June '14
    Begin residency (hopefully): July '14

Now I know that things happen and one should never expect plans to go accordingly, but I want to know if this timeline is realistic or should I more likely expect to be matching 2015. I am trying to figure out my budget for the next couple years so I can give the person helping me pay for school an estimate of cost. All opinions appreciated.

    Possible, yes. Likely, No.
You're giving yourself 1 month for Step 1. Remember, it can take a few weeks to get a date (not that simple). You normally need a passing score to be able to start rotations... that will take a few weeks. You can't take time off, which may not always be in your control. Also, I don't know much about this (maybe a senior member could chime in),not having step 2 score when you apply for residency may work against you.
Unless you're one of those academic superstars, plan for 2015

More than likely not. It will be to rushed, you will not have Step 2 back till late and you literally cant take any time off. You will be rushed to take Step 1. If you rush and knock out a 195 your going to be screwed for residency, especially starting in 2014 when all the new seats us schools added will start to graduate. Also if you take step 1 in October you will not start clinicals till at least November, maybe December.

no one would give you any interviews if you take step 2 three months before residency starts...as an img

as an IMG, you have to have ALL Steps (I, CK, CS) taken and PASSED by ROL submission (~Feb ) to be able to participate in the match...otherwise you are automatically dropped by the NRMP. Also CS has to be taken by Dec 31st of the year prior to the match year to get the scores reported in time for the ROL.

starting in Jan of any year, realistically you are graduating with the Aug class of the SAME year, nit the previous one...is it POSSIBLE...yes, is it realistic...IMHO, no.

Saba: Jan '11-Aug '12 - granted you dont fail
Step 1: MID-lateOct '12 - as long as your results come back before mid november so you can squeeze in a 6 week rotation in nov. and december.
rotations BACK TO BACK pretty much from Jan '13 till June 4th of 2014 [last day for a rotation for you to match to get an ECMFG cert - you cant start residency without this document]

    Apply for residency: Aug/Sept '13
*Clinicals: Oct '12-April '14 - you wont be allowed to start clinicals without your step 1 score.
*Step 2's: April-June '14 --> HELL NO! you have to have your CK results preferably before you actually submit your application. So step 2 Ck should be taken august/sep 2013...and you would NOT have barely finished your core at this time...but as long as you have internal med, surgery, ob/gyn and one of psych and peds done between November 2012 and when you take CK...you are ok.

note, people dont usually take 2 months off for ck...they take maybe 4-6 weeks.

    Begin residency (hopefully): July '14

and i SAID its possible, but come on! most people will want to take some time off to study for CK, CS (and god forbid you FAIL either one of these exams in the rush to make the '14 deadline...because then you are going to be seen as a sub par applicant forevermore), and take time off for interviews...and finishing rotations in june to start residency in july is cutting it close...it take s~2 weeks (at best!) to get ECFMG cert (need the diploma to even start the process)...good chance that you don't get licensed in time to start in july.

thanks for all the input. In the end I will of course ere on the side of caution. Bad scores are not worth trying to force it a year earlier. However, I do like a good challenge
