Quick Tips for Incoming Students From Someone Finishing 1st

    Advertisements

    Hey Guys,

Thought I'd take a little break and post a few things that I had wish I had brought, so I'm passing it on to you.

    1) Bring a RIGHT attitude. Come here humbled, because it not, you WILL get humbled.
    2) MOST IMPORTANTLY, RESPECT the teachers. Don't talk behind their backs, know matter how much you disagree with them. This island is very small, and they can make your life and your semester hell. If you hear anyone talking out loud about them in a negative light, feel free to shut them up.
    3) Try to get to Hillside, its worth spending the few extra hundred. Trust me.

Okay, now for the Items I wish I had brought, or RECOMMEND>

    3) Bring an extra pillow, they suck here.
    4) Laptop. (Invest in an extra power supply)
    5) External USB Hard Drive (320 gigs), you will get all the notes/material within the first week, including extra goodies.
    6) Power Strip
    7) OFF SPRAY , it's mosquito season.
    8) Extra Nalgene Bottles (1 or 2)
    9) BRITA FILTER
    10) Raincoat/poncho ... when it rains it rains. Have you ever watched Forest Gump, where he talks about monsoon season. When it RAINS.
    11) Floss (had trouble finding floss)
    12) Cushion or use your extra pillow (if you are going to dorm at Hillside, they give you some amazing wooden chairs)

I'll add on to this a bit later, gonna get back to work now.

Your right about being humble...I got humblized after block 1...and failed both tests badly..

Brita filter? I never knew anyone that actually drank the water even filtered, go look in your cistern like I did....(100's of dead roaches, a floating rat and a dead bird)...Then drink that water. Bottled water is cheap from St. Kitts, just get a case here and there.

Raincoat..Never used, just bring a couple of cheap dolla store umbrellas.

brita is useless, boil your water or get bottled ones.

rain coat? just bring an umbrella.... it rains on and off but its not torrential down pour. this actually isn't rain season either, the weather here has been off this semester.

NO, you do not NEED them. one of your group mates will have them. there is a huge box of supplies in the lab as well.

also, beware of flirts in the lab!

You just need some gloves....Forget everything else. Every class leaves things behind, you will see blades been there for over 10 years.

I second the seat cushion...and Canadian Tire has a nice gel cushion on sale for $9 during boxing week. I'm definitely bringing mine this time around.

Bring a good surge protector or even two if you can. Make sure they're good ones that will actually protect your laptop.

Your laptop is your life - bring an extra adapter and an external hard drive. If you have a spare laptop that you're not using, bring it as a spare.

If you have extra space, bring some of your favorite snacks. I'm bringing a bunch of Coffee Crisps with me. Most boxes of crackers, triscuits, bottles of peanuts, bags of chips are around $5 which is a little steep to buy on the island if you like junk food.

I also wish I would have brought some more dress clothes and at the very least my dress shoes.
