Hey does anyone know of any good housing available near this rotation available early February til roughly end of March? Or is there someone I should contact at the hospital who organizes this stuff for incoming students? Any help would be appreciated

i just completed my 6 week psych rotation in Brentwood hospital in shreveport. If anyone has any questions they can email me but here is a quick breakdown of my experience that i thought pertinent.

I usually had to wake up early to be at the hospital by 630, did rounds and stuff and got out around 11 am. On Mondays and Thursdays I had to go back at 1 or 130 to work with my attending in a private practice he had set up near the hospital which while was extra work others didnt do I found it to be great practice for talking to patients and doing interviews and cmon, its not that bad. The hospital has free meals, i found housing at University Plaza which is a dorm by LSU Shreveport campus which was very convenient and the program coordinator helps you find housing as well. Overall, very relaxing and educational, definitely recommended and if you have more questions feel free to PM me.

I completely agree. Excellent rotation. Laid back atmosphere, nice facilities. Got a terrific recommendation letter out of this one, learned a great deal. Small southern college town though, so not for "big city" people if that matters to you.

    to darkmansaad or wolfvgang22

Hi, I have the option of doing my psychiatry rotation at this hospital and was wondering if you know how different it is to do a psych rotation at this hospital versus at a psych ward of a general hospital. What was your experience like, meaning what your responsibilities, how much contact did you have with the patients, were you within a group of students at all times or were you able to do things on your own with attendings? Just a few questions I can think of now but if you have any other helpful info to add to that I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much for your help!

When I was there it was one student to one attending, and no residents, a very nice experience. Lots of contact with the patients as a result. Each attending has his or her own preferences. Some want you to pre-round on all the patients before the attending sees them, others don't. I got to dictate, which is valuable experience for residency as some hospitals don't allow that. Some of the attendings keep you all day and you work hard, others are known to be very efficient and you get out before noon. Some of the attending specialize in chemical dependency, others on geriatrics, and another on child and adolescent. PM me if you need more detail, I won't post names here. Child works longest hours, chemical dependency the least in general. Good place to get a letter of recommendation if you work hard on this otherwise easy rotation. So it depends on what you want to get out of the rotation, lots of options. It's a good first rotation for a lot of people, gets your feet wet, not long hard hours or any medically ill patients that need to be in a hospital bed at all. If there is a code, I think they call 911 instead of paging internal medicine like they do in an non psychiatric hospital. Other main difference is no ECT on site that I know of, and no consult service as you would find in a hospital. If you are going into psych you should do a sub-I anyway somewhere and will see plenty of that stuff, if not it's no big loss to you.

Only downside of this rotation is that it doesn't offer housing in-house as I understand they had at Cherry, but LSU-Shreveport has furnished short term lease apartments nearby that they let med students rent. You'd need a car or mate with a car.
    Hope that helped,
