buying books for incoming January newbie

    Advertisements

    To the kind and warm-hearted upper years on the island;
i am looking forward to buy textbooks and supplies for the 1st semester.
if you have already sold your textbooks, can you suggest a store you brought your books and supplies from? it would be awesome if those store have either free or cheap shipping to the island that wouldn't take a month to arrive.
    Thank you

Just about every textbook you need is available electronically here. From upper semesters I've been told to bring USMLE First Aid (which I did) so I recommend you do the same. The only other book you might want to get is Netters so that you can look at images while you're in lab. If you want a Netters let me know and I'll sell you mine when you get to the island in Jan.

As for supplies...depends what you want/need. Printing can get pricey on Saba, especially with how much material you go through. If you can work off of your laptop or make handwritten notes on looseleaf (that you can bring) that will be ideal.

Thank you for your reply, rs27
If you don't mind, I have few things I want to clarify with people actually on the island.
Regarding the textbooks, you mentioned in your last post they are available electronically, so the textbooks are in their CD forms? or do I have to access them online? I have read from other posts that internet connection on the island is horrible. I am preparing my mind to go "internet-free" for 20 months.
Did you use a shipping service to transport your supplies to the island?

    thank you very much

I believe the person is referring to PDF books that can be read through adobe.

Like that person said, you may want to look into getting First Aid, or wait until the 2011 version is out.

All other text books can be found on the island from upper semesters wanting to get rid of them. Books should be pretty cheap (5-20 bucks, not sure what they're going for now). Most students don't want to haul those text books home when they're done fifth. They get passed down from semester to semester. G'luck.

Now that I know a bit more about the life on island, I am more excited for January to come. Just hope that the food there is good lol. I read threads of living off microwave foods and apparently bring cans and cans of tuna? lol

When I get some more time I'll update the stuff to bring thread, but man if you have extra space bring tons of snacks if you're into junk food because a bag of doritos will run you $5 US here as will a jar of salted peanuts.

Oh and whatever you do, make sure you get Hillside for your dorm

I am also coming to Saba for the January 2011 class. I am also interested in purchasing some of the required materials. How much are you selling it for Oanas?

One more question: Is there anyone that either was or is enrolled in Anatomy know how I might be able to access some of the powerpoints? I wanted to start reviewing some of the Anatomy (since it has been a while for me), but I can't access any of the information. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
