    Advertisements

    Hi guys.
Does anyone study at M.Gorky Donetsk National Medical University? Or has any idea about the university?.
Probably I'm going to study there, but I dont know much about the university.
Does it have corruption ? Are there racist people in Donetsk? How is the quality of the education?(i keep my expectations low since its ukraine, but is it toooo bad or standard for that region?) Are there many foreign students ?

    Hope to hear from you.
    Thanks.

Hi Hosanna_med , thanks for your reply 1st of all.
I'm looking for information via web and friends for a long time for the ukranian med.schools.as much as i heard, most people dont recommend lviv, lugansk and kharkiv(honestly i heard that Lugansk is the worst one about bribery).and i have friends who studied in Lviv, they told me that donetsk, kiev and odessa are the best options to study in ukraine.since then i'm trying to find a school in between them, thru web i've read better comments about Donetsk,so now just reduced to that one : ).
and meanwhile,Skopje(Macedonia) is also hitting my mind time to time, since it is listed in med.board of California list.(not planning to work in Cali, but i feel like if a university is listed there, its a good one then)..
but still Donetsk tops the list since it also has english medium.

    Quite complicated,huh? : )

P.S. : btw,i'm also thinking to visit donetsk after 22nd of Oct to apply personally.

P.S. 2 : have u heard negative stuff about the eastern part of ukraine,so you are going for the western part ?

    Thanks again.

    hi Axle,
I m doing first western part st because I'm visiting by train (very old ones but give the possibility to cross half ukraine by night for 6$!)
my impression about lviv is quite different , the nicest city among those I saw , faculty is well directed. english section is existing and working fine. but for me it won't do because the don't offer the conditions I'm looking for regarding PG (means that they oblige me to stay away from patients during a full "preparatory year" ... no way)
no special things to say about ivano frankisk or tchernivisti , less beautiful cities , maybe cheaper to live in
My first idea is to go to Ternopil , I quite flashed for this town , smaller than lviv. and with official more understanding in my will not to interrupt my medical practice

    To quote devildoc:

Kristina, how does XMed plan to overcome the 1-to-1 ratio of (US grads to US internship positions) proposed by AAMC? No students entering medical school in the Ukraine (or Russia) now will graduate before 2016, when that ratio is proposed to be achieved. It would be very interesting to know how you plan on placing these students in US residencies.

    Hi MorningCloak!

We deal with admissions to Ukrainian universities. That 1-1 match may effect any graduate from any medical school anywhere in the world outside of the U.S. Likely if the proposed 1-1 match is fully implimented it would make it more difficult for non U.S. graduate doctors to get residencies in the U.S.

For your information here is the current ratio of International Grads to US Grads who apply for residency in the US:

another advantage is the continued mentality of a lot of AMGs. they are slow to adapt to the ever changing climate. they still have the sense of entitlement and their ego continues to get in their way. IMGs have always been realistic and applied broadly and have backup specialties. Quite a few average to mediocre AMGs apply only to competitive specialties and programs with no backup programs. they also dont apply broadly. this results in the close to 1000 that didnt match this year and had to go through SOAP.

"Please understand however that the best students will always be able to do residency in the US."

    Yes, hope springs eternal.

That makes no mention, however, of the available specialties for these excellent students. It would be a bitter pill indeed for someone to excel through medical school overseas, score competitively on the USMLE steps, and still be relegated to a family medicine residency in Duluth, if they can match at all. (Not that there is anything wrong with FM, mind, but if they want to practice orthopedics?)

The post you shared from Scott1981 is great, but that refers to the current environment. Someone who enters medical school this Fall will enter the match for 2017... to compare how things are now to how things are expected to be as the 1-to-1 ratio starts to take effect is a bit disingenuous, in my opinion.
