    Tver and Kursk......?

    Advertisements

    Hello guys!

I've been considering joining an MD program in Russia for some time and frankly, it is confusing as hell and there seems to be massive loads of problems with these universities. I am financially constrained so Russia may very well be a last resort.

Two of the unis that have come up are Tver State Medical Academy and Kursk State Medical University....do you have any knowledge about these two? Apparently they rank somewhere in the top 20 according to 2005 Russian govt rankings but all these stories about corruption, bad living conditions and poor quality of education in Russian unis have left me wondering.

Any input will be helpful..please be as informative and honest as possible because this is a major decision. Thank you.

Hey there. If finances are a problem, then Russia might very well be your last resort(along with Ukraine and China even though I personally wouldn't recommend any of these). Don't fall for the rankings as they means nothing. The stories you've been hearing are probably true ( not necessarily all of them). If I had to go to Russia, I'd stay in either Moscow or St. Petersburg. Don't go to any other cities if possible as they aren't worth it in terms of both education and quality of life. Try to go for People's Friendship University or Moscow Medical Academy or St. Petersburg I.P. Pavlov University as these were the options I was considering while searching for prospective medical schools. Let me know if you need any more help. Take care!

Thanks for your advice abhishek. I've heard living expenses in Moscow are very high. Is this true? How about St. Petersburg? Do you know about the quality of I. P. Pavlov university there?
Another option I'm considering is Tblisi in Gerogia..please let me know if you have any idea about there as well.

    Thanks!

Yeah the living expenses in Moscow are a bit higher compared to the other cities in Russia. St. Petersburg is a bit cheaper but these two cities are the costliest cities in Russia. I.P. Pavlov is supposed to be good but, then again, all universities in Russia have been in steady decline over the last few years.
I don't really have much information about Tblisi other than the fact that their course is based on the US medical style of teaching and that it's not too burdening in terms of finances.

There are one or two decent medical universities in Ukraine ( I think) but it would be better if you did a thorough search on this forum about this. There has been a lot of debate about the quality of education in Ukraine and it has been discussed extensively in several posts.

I've read quite a lot of those in these forums. And those about Russia as well. Their quality is rather questionable by all accounts.
