    Dormitory conditions in Russia

    Advertisements

I see some people saying that dormitory accommodation is in poor condition in some Russian university's .Can people who are in Russia post photos of their dormitory accommodation

Only photos I have seen are from " englishrussia dot com/2011/12/23/dormitory-hardened/"

Good accommodation is my main concern.

What medium are you planning to study in? And no, the dormitory conditions are not poor in some Russian university, but in MOST Russian Universities, except for a few maybe.

Check some videos in youtube, which might not tell you the whole story but they'll give you an idea.

    Hi Epimed

Would like to study in St Petersburg in English medium as that is my native language . I was in St Petersburg as a tourist last year and liked the city. But Im guessing that you could move between university's in Russia over the 6 years?

If the dormitory is crap how much would a apartment be to rent per month in St Petersburg ?

What is the time table for study , generally do you get the Russian summer as a holiday ? That way I could go home and earn money working for the next year.

Also is there a list of textbooks needed in medical courses?

    Thanks for you help

I'm not studying in Russia, so I'm not the best person to answer your questions, but I can tell you what I know based on a lot of of research that I have done and the many opinions that I gathered from the internet.

There is a user here in VMD that studied in PFUR (People's Friendship University of Russia) and is currently (maybe he finished it) doing his residency in Michigan, I believe. I've read a lot of his posts, and while he might seem to be an agent, he honestly doesn't seem like one (at least for me). According to him, the 'rejects' of Moscow go to St. Petersburg, which really says something.

Would like to study in St Petersburg in English medium as that is my native language.
According to the FAIMER and IMED, the English program of med schools in St. Petersburg and in most of Russia (except for a few) are not recognized. I'm saying this based on the fact that in the websites of both the FAIMER and IMED, English is not listed as a language of instruction---only Russian is listed. The only English approved program that I'm aware of is the one offered by RSMU.

But Im guessing that you could move between university's in Russia over the 6 years?
Yeah, I guess that is possible, but you'll have to check each university's policy on transfer students.

If the dormitory is crap how much would a apartment be to rent per month in St Petersburg?
Don't really have an estimate, but in Moscow, things are very expensive. In fact, Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. I believe that a 1-bedroom apartment would cost at least $800USD/month, which is pretty damn expensive for a student.

I'm not aware of the time table of study, as the English version of Russian med schools don't offer a lot of info. I'm sure there are holidays.

As for textbooks, I would assume that for anatomy, Netter's atlas will do the job. Not aware of much more, as I'm not even in med school :/

Btw, have you considered other countries? Russia should really be one of your last choices.

I would not say most hostels are all that bed. We published a picture of just one hostel – which is in Moscow State (CONTEMPORARY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES | EDUCATION IN RUSSIA | HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INTITUTIONS | MSU) But to my experience Peoples Friendship University offers very comfortable options for accommodation. Some hostels in Moscow Medical Academy are not that bad. I heard RSMU started the rooms renovation but still did not see the result.
All medical schools in Russia are state institutions and have to use the same curriculum approved by the states. Therefore, in a case if being a student you successfully finished the current year of study, it should be not a problem to change the school. However, please, be aware you would need to leave Russia and return back with student visa issued upon request of your new university.
All the ranks, where Moscow is argued to be one of the most expensive cities, mainly concern costs of services to VIP visitors. They take into account the expenses of a person who uses accommodation in 5start hotel, dining in the hotel restaurant etc. In terms of student life, it is not that expensive. For instance, the student’ pass for public transport costs about USD 8-10/ month.
Those who would like to see Russian MD curriculum: let me know your E-mail address in this thread or by pm.
