Revision courses & career guidance for plab, mci indian screening test

    Advertisements

Hi All, This bad press for Russian graduates has lasted too long. I have experienced it first hand when I first graduated from Russia and went back to India. I have had to overcome and prove myself on numerous ocassions. I am now on a coveted regiatrar rotation in London.
I think the hurdles felt when I went back to India was despite all 5s in the finals and being otlichnik there is a complete lack of preparedness to real life medicine. The transition from a medical student to a competent doctor involves a steep learning curve and for a Russian graduate its even steeper.
The way around it is awareness of what awaits ahead and starting to prepare early perhaps as early as 1st year. If you know where you want to go when you leave Russia you would automatically choose the right path.
We are currently working to launch a career guidance and medical education project in Russia in the next few months. It would involve teaching on various medical and surgical topics, exam preparation for PLAB, the Indian screening exam, orientation to postgraduate training in the UK and in India. The faculty would involve doctors currently practicing in the UK in various specialties. Although initially, it would perhaps be monthly weekend sessions, we would soon be launching a website to offer continuing support and training online.
I would be very interested to hear from current medical students in Russia and their future plans. If you are interested in knowing more or would like to get involved in the project please reply to the post.

    Hi,
I completed my medicine from St Petersburg in 2007. After several desperate attempts screening test remains still a hurdle to me. Is it possible to do a rotatory internship in UK ? Or any other possibilities?

    Dear Ogneopasno
I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with the MCI screening exam. With regards to your query about rotatry internship in UK, postgraduate training in the UK starts witha 2 year Foundation Programme that involves six 4 month placements in medical and surgical specialties over a period of 2 years. To be eligible for this you need to pass PLAB. PLAB involves Part 1 which is a mcq test and Part 2 which is OSCE( Objective Structured Clinical Examination) that tests your communication and examination skills.
Before taking the PLAB you need to complete IELTS as evidence of English proficiency and aim to score 7 or more in all modules. What was your medium of instruction in Russia? If it was English then perhaps you could be exempted from IELTS but there will be alternate evidence of English proficiency needed.
I am not saying medical training in UK is easier than India, these are two different systems with different challenges, however by cracking the MCI screening you would have passed 1 exam, by passing PLAB and gaining UK experience you would open a world of oppurtunities.
Having said that, this is a steeple chase challenges will continue and there are no short cuts to success.
May I ask what do you think is the main problem with your preparation for the MCI screening and what is your current strategy ?
    Best Wishes!

    Thanks Smolny for your advise.
Since I studied in Russian medium, I need to prepare for IELTS first, ah? I have my sister who is a citizen and living in UK, so getting visa is not a big issue. Is it possible to clear IELTS and PLABE while being in UK? Is it possible to get any medical job till I clear these?

I know that clearing MCI is the best thing to do. As I am back from Russia in 2007, I didn't made any preparations for FMGE, I appeared several times just to try the luck, mean while I started working as CMO of a multiprofile hospital. Then I found that its never gonna happen on luck, I joined for semi regular batch in DIAMS. Every time I attend, I felt that I am gonna clear that time, but all results came same. I had more than 140 every time I appeared after preparation. Once I got 148 too . I have good clinical knowledge,so practice is successful. The hospital pays me good, but I am fed up with working in same current - need to upgrade myself.

I think lost touch with theoretical subjects, I felt biochemistry and microbiology difficult. If I am preparing the next two months, which MCQ book will be better? I have notes from DIAMS with me.

Really!? Your user name is "plabsuccess," your signature is "PLAB Success," and you suggest using "PLAB SUCCESS?"

    What a shocker.

Yes. That is because we are promoting our institute. We could have create fake profiles and post fake reviews. But we are not like the others.
