Admission for 2010/11 academic year will be open in May. At this time the student is able to secure the place and get Confirmation of admission. The invitation process (issuing documents for student visa support) is to start in June – July. As a rule it takes about a month: the invitation letter is to be released by Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Russian Embassy abroad requires the original invitation letter (results of medical observations as well). The student is also expected to verify his/her documents on complete School education (certificate/diploma and transcript/marksheet). It usually includes a stamp of local Ministry of Education and a stamp of Russian embassy in your country.
Students from Malaysia shall get No Objection letter from their Ministry of Education.
Academic year starts in September-October (graduate programs) and September-November (pre-university study). Some universities form special groups of students who apllied later, they may start in November-December.

INVITATION LETTER – the document to be issued by Ministry of Internal Affairs upon request of the university, which is ready to accept the applicant. The document mentions applicants full name, CV and passport details, etc. The original invitation letter is required by Russian Consulate when you apply for Russian student visa.

Application process: you may apply either directly to the selected university or through agency having a contract with this university. There are certain positive and negative points of each way. For instance, university burocracy makes the process slow and sometimes ineffective. Also, it takes a lot of time to contact a number of the universities (if you did not decide yet where to go). Also, no university will provide with a comparative information on what is the difference between the schools. Alternatively, the agency, especially one representaing a number of schools, may offer fast and adequate reply describing all the opportunities. But there are some agents who overcharge the university fees...
In general, the application process is standard:
    - you need to direct to the university (directly or through an agent) an Application package,
    - in a case your qualification satisfies the university requirements, they issue and admisssion confirmation and start the invitation process (issuing invitation letter), which usually requires up to a month,
    - due to recomendations of the state immigration office, the applicants are expected to pay for their first-year university fees (tuition, insurance, accommodation) before their arrival to Russia (once the admission and invitation letters are ready),
    - an applicant shall receive the original invitation letter and use it when applying for Russian visa (please, contact Russian Consulate in your countries for what more documents are required: photographs, results of medical observations, results of X-ray assay, blood/urine tests, AIDS test, etc),
    - every prospective student shall legalise his/her documents of school education by getting a seal over the documents from local Ministry of Education and Russian Consulate,
    - it is recommended to get these documents translated to Russian language (in two copies) and the translation shall be verified by the Consulate's stamp,
    - graduate programs in Russia start in September (some English-medium programs may start in October-November), pre-university (Foundation) courses are starting in Septyember – November. You shall consider arrival to Russia few days before your program starts. You would need at least a couple of days for orientation, registration with the university and with the states.

Students from some contries are required to register with their national Consulate while studying in Russia.
