Application Essay: How strict are they on the word limit?

    Advertisements

On the admission's application it says the essay can be no more than 300 words. Are they very strict on this (as in they will stop reading at 300 words or won't even consider your essay if it goes over the word limit)? Mine's a couple hundred words over 300 and I'm having trouble shortening it any more.

    not very strict

Although they are not very strict, meaning you can probably get away with up to 200 wds more, you shouldn't have to write such a long personal statement.

During my interview this past august the interviewer commented on my essay and said it was concise and to the point. He liked it because it briefly and quickly went through my background and exposure to medicine and why I wanted to be a doctor. He then laughed and mentioned the kids that call and say that they've been writing for a month and can't seem to get it down under 2 pages.

To be honest, it took me quite a while to finish mine, but the simpler you make it the better it usually is.

    Good Luck

I am a firm believer in the KISS principle....Keep It Simple, Stupid (now don't go taking offense to this...I'm not directing it to you personally) Sometimes a simple and concise statement has a bigger impact than some drawn out wordy thing. You need to think about the "bottom line" of what it is that your trying to say, and then butcher (edit) the thing.

My essay was 315 words long, and of course, I freaked out because try as I might, I could not spare a single word. I called the school and I guess it must have been obvious from my tone that I was stressing over nothing because the lady on the phone seemed to be amused by the situation. Anyway she said the 300 word limit is a guideline, or a yardstick if you like. You can go over or under...just don't overdo it. She told me not to send in a 900 word essay but 315 is ok and I assume anywhere up to 400 should be no problem

You hit the nail on the head! It's just a guideline.....anyone who has exactly 300 words would be pretty darn anal.

    Re

Mine was 700 and the interviewer didn't mind. Like everyone said it's just a guideline.
