    Hey guys,

Would you suggest to go to Dominica and look for housing and take the housing tour or to make a deposit for an apt from here? Thanks!!

    Re: ques on Housing

That is a tough question. Now with all the great information online its much easier to choose before you get there. Many students will do that and therefore some of the best options will be taken by the time you get there. However, nothing ever beats seeing something in person and thus you will be able to choose exactly what you want in the area you want it after seeing it (of course you will get to choose from only those which are not take already). Best of luck to you!

Here is my experience. I think it would be a good idea to come down here prepared for the worest. That way you will not be disappointed.

You will stay at teh school Housing call Ross University Housing RUH the first night. It's like $35 us or something. The nest the school will organize everyone who arrived the day before on a housing tour. Keeo in mind that you are supposed to pick out what you wanted that day unless you want to pay $50 US that night to stay at RUH again. Also remember that it only cost $395 US per month to live at RUH, and RUH is made for students to live them, it's like a no star-hotel room with A/C and hot water.

If you have a friend, make sure both of you come on the same day so you guys came find soemthing together.

I am living in RUH now, because I am lazy. And because I have no roomate and did not know anyone when I came here. You will also be surprised to see what a $800-900 monthly rent apartment looks like here on the island, in my mind you can save that money and go home a few extra times.

Make sure you bring a good Maglite flashing light, a good umbrella, and an open mind. Bring all the snacks you can fit into your bags, don;t get here with your bags under the weight limit, bring all 75 pounds.

    good luck

you can email me at [email protected] if you have any more questions

    corrections to Fat's post

    Fat One:

The latest that I heard is that the first night's stay at RUH is FREE to the student. Additionally, I have heard that the trip from the airport is FREE. Ross is encouraging students to choose housing from the housing site, but the are also giving the option of letting you come there and take the housing tour and pick after you arrive.

There are numerous full apartments that are completely furnished and within walking distance of Ross. Don't feel that you have to limit yourself by picking RUH, although if you are lazy and don't want to walk more than 4 min., it is probably your best alternative. For a few min. more to walk and $25 more it is possible to have much more comfortable surroundings.

The limitation to the weight of luggage is 70 pounds (ie-ONE 70 pound bag or TWO bags totalling 70 pounds. This is if you are flying AA, but check with other airlines. Last Aug. I was surprised to find that my limit was considerably less. If you're bringing in snacks, pick ones that you can't live without and cannot get there.

    Re: corrections to Fat's post

Unless something has changed since the last break you will have to pay about 30 bucks for the first night and 50 thereafter. Also unless they change it you can only stay there if you are a 1st semester. 395 a month is not bad but I only paid 400 a month 1st semester and had a kitchen and everything. It is a good option for 1st semester but try and find something during the semester to move into for 2nd.

The airport ride is free and has been since may of last year. If you need to bring more than 70 pounds just send a barrel of stuff for like 80 bucks. With laparkan I shipped up to 300 pounds for just 80. Takes about 2 weeks to get to the island depending on the day you take it to the dropoff point.

    apartments

It is 35 u.s. dollars a night to stay in RUH. I stayed there the first night i got here this semester. As far as what i would personally do if i had it to do over, I would waite until I got here. There are a few reasons for this. First of all if you are coming in May, there is considerable evidence to suggest that the may class will be very small just as the current january class is. Secondly, there currently is a lot of empty apartments avaliable because the january class was very small. Third there are a number of new biuldings being built that look as if they will be complete by may. Finally if you are really concerned about getting a really good apartment then dont come down here the day class starts but rather show up 2 weeks ahead of time like i did. I must admit I got really board but it gave me plenty of time to rent a car and explore the island. Also you will have your pic of the avaliable apartments. Hope this helps.

    man

So, i got a letter in the mail from Ross saying that we can wait till we get to the island to pick out housing and have the housing tour. Would have been better to know before I sent in my deposit for RUH! Plus now if you don't find housing the first day, they will let you stay at the hotel for free, but only the first night.

    Re: man

Nobody really finds housing the first day they arrive. Most flights arrive in the afternoon and after everybody gets off the plane and gets on the transport. After the 1 hour ride to the University area most everybody is exhausted from their LONG day or two of travel. The housing tour usually happens the morning of the next day. Don't be dissapointed with your housing choice. You will get to do other things instead of searching for housing, setting up your Cable and Wireless Phone line, and moving in. Besides, it sounds like RUH is a pretty good deal and definitely one of the closest options around now.
