    The MERP program

    Advertisements

Is the MERP program really a bad idea? The course load seems quite significant, and it seems it would create a challenge just about for anyone. Why is it considered a money making scheme? If the school wanted to make extra money they can easily accept marginal students to the first year class, hope that some of these students will fail the first semester, or somewhere along the way, and repeat as the new policy states. On the other hand the MERP program seems like it is do or die. If you pass you continue to the medical school, and if you fail you simply go home.

    med prep

I didn't take it but in my opinion I think it is a waste of time and a way for Ross to make extra money. How many people think that the Mcat is a good indicator on how u will do in Med school? It may be similar to taking the usmle or something like that but as far a s the information goes I havent used hardly any Physics yet and Im in 3rd. I think med prep is like a review course for taking the Mcat exam. A friend of mine took it semester before last and he said it had a lot of physics in the course which is really a waste of time.

    The MERP Program

The NEW MERP is in Miami, and NO longer has physics in the curriculum..

it's : Medical Biochem, Physiology, Medical Immunology, Medical Microbiology and one I always forget...

I am considering to go in April to MERP

It is an additional opportunity if you ask me.. They could just say NO thank you..

this is YES a do or die.. but hey.. at least you're given a shot at it.....

If this is your ONLY chance at medschool, and you REALLY WANT TO DO THIS, then I think you should consider giving MERP a try..

    med prep

If those our the new courses then I would say go for it. Before it was nothing more than a Mcat review. Taking those courses before coming couldnt hurt.

    The REAL MERP

OK, let's put all of the speculation to rest. MERP is not a waste of time. It is also not a remedial class for those who couldn't cut it. I am a current MERP student, and looking at our class demographics, there is no "classical" MERP student. We have people just out of college and we have people who have been out of school for years. We have people who got less than perfect on the MCAT, and we have people who scored in the 30's or near to it. GPA's also run the spectrum. Getting into MERP, while initially frustrating, isn't a defeat-it IS a chance to prove yourself and get a big jump into medical school.

I know that the old program on Dominica was less than perfect, but this program is COMPLETELY different. We take Medical Microbiology, Medical Biochemistry, Immunology/Histology, and Human Physiology. The way they tailored this program gives us experience in some of the toughest courses we will be taking on the island. Not to mention what we are learning is far from "watered down" medical education. What we are learning here has direct connection to what we'll see on the island. But perhaps the most important thing that MERP will give you is practice studying at a level you've never studied at before. Also you meet great people and build friendships that will make the transition to the island that much easier. All of the people here feel like they have something to prove, so everyone works their hardest, and I fully believe that we are all going to have an advantage when we get to the island.

MERP is great, and for those brave enough to buckle down and work hard, it does exactly what it promises...it prepares you for your medical education.

    Re: The REAL MERP

You guys from MERP are gonna be much better prepared than I was. I started Ross with zero background and zero prepared. Everything is new and painful to absorb.
