Role of Interview in Admissions Decision?

    Advertisements

What role does the interview play in the admissions decision? Does the interviewer recommend MERP, acceptance, or denial to the admissions committee or does the admissions committee decide that by themselves?

I think the interviewer will put in a recommendation but ultimately it is up to the ad com. Did you have a bad interview?

Ah, thanks. Actually it was one of the best interviews I have ever had. I'm borderline MERP and I really want to start directly. I was just hoping a good interview would help push me toward direct admission.

Late reply I suppose, but I think the interview is huge. I honestly think I probably was a borderline MERP candidate as well but felt my interview went exceptionally well, and I was directly admitted. Everything worked out well and I occasionally/rarely still stay in touch with the person who interviewed me.

The interviewer does provide recommendations for acceptance vs MERP vs denial. If you make it to the interview - you at least meet standards that are competitive for admission. If you interview really well, the interviewer can recommend direct admission... in that case the admissions committee will make a decision (likely direct admit vs MERP) based on how competitive your application is, the class size, which semester you are applying for, etc...

Again, it is entirely possible that the interview goes well and you get denied. There are no guarantees.
