    Failing basic science

    Advertisements

Hi , need some advice pleasemail. I didnt pass the basic science class in the 4th semester , can I repeat the class the next semester? My counselor told me I have to take a whole semester off and then repeat the term, but I feel like I would do worse waiting 4 months just to repeat the semester . If anyone has been in this situation, do you know of who I can speak to to see if I can restart right away ? Can I speak with the dean of student affairs ? The Ross website says it's bad if students take voluntary breaks because this interrupts the continuous learning process , but this should obviously apply to any situation. taking a semester off is too long, any help is appreciated, thanks .

I once failed a program of study (not medical) and took the semester off. I used the time to master the deficient area of study by utilizing different resources. I came back and aced it! In the psychology of learning, everyone reaches a plateau where they flat line. Some need rest others need to find a different approach/angle to learning.

Sounds to me like you need to contact the Dean's office. They would be able to answer that for you as no one here is an expert on the policies of RUSM. You could always check the student handbook I believe this is incorporated as well.

Unless you failed due to some unexpected problems like illness, family issues, I would recommend you seriously consider your chances of passing the rest of your classes, including the boards.

As you advance in your medical education you will quickly realize that the volume of information you need to learn and retain grows exponentially. I don't know about your study skills but if you are having difficulty with basic sciences, things won't get any easier as you progress.

Honestly I think some people who are more clinically oriented do better on Step 2 and 3 than Step 1. Getting to 4th you have to think if you have barely passed each semester or did well and had a 1 off bad semester. Bad semesters can happen to anyone. But making it to 4th means you probably have the ability to do it. Seems those who repeat a semester later than 1st or 2nd tend to do decent in the future from what I have seen but that is anecdotal.
