    January 2014

    Advertisements

Hi. I first would like to say thanks to everyone that posts on value MD as I believe it is very helpful. I just joined value MD, and since I did not see any particular thread for January 2014, I figured I should start one. I was just accepted at Ross School of Medicine (Jan. 2014), and was wondering if anyone else will be starting then.

    I have a few questions:

1.) Cell phones: What is the best way to go about cell phones when coming from the US? Is it better to buy a cell phone in Dominica or bring the cell phone from the US?

2.) Housing: How early can one apply for housing?

    1. Cell phone. Bring an unlocked cell phone such as IPhone. Then download an app like Skype and buy a US phone number from Skype for like $5-6 a month. You can then make unlimited calls to the US from WIFI. Others use international calling apps that are free but I have been off the island awhile so I don't know any specific ones. Also you'll be Able to purchase a Dominican SIM card and place it in your phone and make local calls on the island.

    2. Housing: they should give you access to the database soon after you get accepted. Make sure to look for housing near campus, not near the annex. Even though 1st sem classes are at the annex, it's really out of the way and it's better around campus.

Use viber or whatsapp, it's free. If not, register yourself with Google Voice when you are in the states. It will give you a local phone number. Once you register with google voice and after they give you a phone number, download Talkatone on your android or iphone. It will give you a local number from back home and that way you can call or text your friends/family from back home over wifi. All calls and texts are free as long as you are calling the US. PM me if you have any questions

I have a few more questions:

1.) Shipping: If I was to have some stuff (additional food/supplies..etc.) shipped from the US to Dominica, what is the best way to go about it? What type of packaging?

2.) Housing: What is the best way to go about doing laundry?

3.) Any advice that would be helpful in adjusting to Dominica as an island and/or for medical school??

    Hey Guys,

    I had a few questions:

1.I am starting this January 14 and I was looking into the 5-semester curriculum that Ross has. Would this delay my Residency match by a year (if everything else goes well)? I could not find any timeline on how off-cycle semesters (Jan, May) lead to residency. Which semesters do students start applying for a match? I know im asking this question wayyy in advance, but any information on this would be great.
    2. When do students take the step 1. Do we take it during 4th or 5th semester? If we take it at the end of 4th, do we get extra time to study?
    3. Has anyone stayed or currently staying in Portsmouth beach hotel? I heard good things about it, what do you guys think?

Thank you guys in advance for any information.

If you start Ross in May you can make same match year as those who start September. If you start in January you will have 4 months extra time before your match. If you start in Sept and do extra semester it can be done but would be extremely difficult to match on time.

When you say "do extra semester" is that a caution for someone who has to redo a semester? or is it something everyone goes through?
