How do I look for psych so far?

    Advertisements

Just got my step score back- 215. I had to repeat 4th semester and my gpa is a 2.8 (including the repeated semester). At this point do I have a decent shot at a psych residency? Thanks.

Still possible, especially if you can show a legitimate interest in psychiatry... but not if you are actually killing elephants. That just won't play well in an interview.

Might want to change your shirt, I'm told they like neutral colors over there in psych!

You will easily match with a Step 1 of 215 in psychiatry. Keep studying hard and do well on Step 2 as well. No one will care about your GPA or repeated semester.

Thanks for the responses. Do they do Sub-I's for psych or is that just in medicine? Also, is a 215 still decent for psych even with the impending residency crunch in 2015 when I will be matching?

Matching in 2015 is probably not as bad as 2016+.

You could complete elective rotation(s) in psychiatry, certainly, but no idea about sub-I's. Probably well worth googling and/or contacting some programs directly.

Thanks. Is 2016 really going to be that bad?

There is no crystal ball, but take a look at the articles and papers put out by the AAMC and in JAMA. They don't exactly provide a promising outlook.

Frankly, I don't think that there is any way that they can achieve their stated objective of a 1-to-1 ratio (US grads to internship positions) by that time (2016/2017)... but the simple fact is that they are actively working toward that end. That can only make things progressively harder for the IMG/FMG set who want to match in the US, year by year.

I am from Ross. I applied to Psych only this year. Mid 220s on both step and Pass on CS all 1st attempt. Applied to 70 programs and got 16 interviews. I didn't do any psych electives but I highly recommend it. Try to get an A in your Psych core and electives. GPA never came up during interviews. Your GPA will improve once you are in clinical. Be ready to explain the 4th semester repeat during interviews but it might not come up at all. Psych interviews are very relaxed where programs are trying to get to know you better. I only had one person ask me some really tough questions during the entire interview trail.

I have met Rossies with lower step 1 score than yours on the trail with 10+ interviews. Try to do much better on Step 2 CK, get one or two good psych LORs lined up and you can probably match into a very well respected mid tier psych program. I haven't matched yet but saying all this based on my experience so far this year. Good luck!!
