    2nd time comp prep

    Advertisements

i am taking the comp for the 2nd time next month and was wondering what is the best way to study for this? i have been reading the FA and plan to do questions from usmle rx but is this enough? i heard that the exam is harder the second time so should i study kaplan or goljian? any advice especially from people who passed it the 2nd time would be helpful!

do some goljan path if you have time, majority of the test is pathology. make sure you know your biostatistics a few easy points. lastly make sure to do plenty of practice questions, you will not only learn from the ones you got wrong but get used to reading larger stems than they give you at Ross.

I would definitely try either Kaplan QBank or USMLEWorld..I've heard Rx is good, but not sure how representative it is of the exam. Whichever Qbank you use, be sure your question timing is good too! 1 month is kind of tight, but I'd recommend at least 2x'ing DIT just to annotate your FA.
    Good luck.

I the COMP is tough! my advice, is keep reading FA but make sure you do a bunch of practice questions! I recommend USMLEworld. They're very predictive and extremely helpful. Additionally, doing practice questions improves efficiency and confidence. A month is enough time to study... don't worry... remember, you just need to pass. By the way, what do you guys need to get to pass the exam now?? Then once you're doing with the COMP, keep studying and sign up for the Step I. Try to get step I out of the way as quickly as possible! The longer ppl delay taking step I usually the worse they do. Best of luck!!~

this is not entirely true. although taking massive amounts of time to take the simple test that is step 1 is frowned upon, the best time to take it is when your scores on the practice exams are starting to level out from an ascent.

as for studying for the comp, dont do anything that you did the first time, and do something you didnt do last time. if your qbank for the comp was usmlerx, use something else. if you used first aid for the comp, try a few brs or kaplan notes. think logically.

    Blessing in disguise

I thought the comp was actually harder than Step I, mostly because of the sheer stamina it requires, but think of this as Step I prep - I worked my tail off for the comp and did well the second time around and took the step a few weeks later once I got my ticket and did well. Here was my strategy:

    1) Look at your score sheet from comp and see where your weaknesses are and work particularly hard on those. For me it was biochem and I read the Kaplan review book cover to cover (btw - I really wish I had this on the island - made biochem make so much more sense!)

    2) FA - cover to cover at least once. I highly recommend several times especially in sections you're weak in.

    3) Question banks: I think the NBME question banks are more similar to comp type questions than Uworld or Kaplan. The comp questions are just weirdly worded and so are NBME's.

    4) Goljan - I listened to him whenever I got a chance and would fill in pertinent info in my FA.

Taking that exam the second time around can be scary, especially when you see people from a semester ahead of you that you thought were really smart - ie TA's and the likes, but don't let it get you down. Get a good night's rest, take something warm to wear because that room gets COLD and build up your stamina.

    Wish you the best!

Well for the comp. I agree with the earlier posts... Finish FAx2 with DIT will be nice but even without would be good. UWorld is gold standard and the best Qbank to learn from. I had done Rx for the comp and saved Uworld for the step which I think was a mistake. My NBMEs went up significantly after doing Uworld. Rx boasted my NBME scores but World boasted it even more and helped me get a very decent Step I score. Do World Twice before the step if you have time. Rx will help you to learn FA well though... so the choice is yours.
