    Leaving for the Rock

    Advertisements

So today I'm finally leaving for Dominica to start RUSOM September 2010. It's been one hell of a journey getting to this stage, with all the paperwork processing, Visa requirements, bill of health, financial aid and everything in between. The luggage is packed, documents are in order, and excitement/fear is definitely in the air. To those of you who are in the same boat, I wish you the best of luck in your travels. For those who are seasoned Dominica travelers, wish me luck! See you all there in a few days!

I am leaving this week for the rock, and shipped barrels full of things. Tried not to pack any electronics and the like. Does anyone know what kind of customs payment I might expect? My wife and I are coming and the barrels have kitchen, bath, and general supplies. If you have any experience with this, please tell me the amount they charged per barrel. (and I now that it differs depending on the contents, just trying to get a general idea.)

I paid 300 US for 2 barrels full of general supplies. 55 gallon drums.

Was the $300 US to ship the barrels, or just the amount you had to pay to customs to receive them?

Please let us know... and where did you ship your barrels from? Anyone shipping from mid-west (OH/IN/KY/TN) area? I have no idea of where I can ship barrels from here... ugh... i hate living in the middle of nowhere

300 was just to get the barrels from customs in Dominica. I believe it was 350 with delivery to my apartment. Shipping the barrels is another story. I used Tropicana but my shipping was from west coast.

OMG.... $300 for CUSTOMS? That is ridiculous!!! Anyone else experience similar cost from customs? Did you have mostly electronics? Or what type of stuff did you pack, if you don't mind telling us...

    Thanks!

I think 300 US is an extremely inflated number. let me break down the cost:

    Cost of Barrel - $20
Barrel Shipping from Miami to Dominica - $75
Getting your barrel TO Miami from wherever you are - $75 (this is what i paid to get it from LA to Miami)
Transport and Customs Fees - $68 (Alexis charged me 170 EC for transport and customs fees)

i had some electronics in the bottom but I think it was too much of a hassle to get there. i think my customs fees may have been higher because I listed these electronics on my packing list. I heard that its best to just write, "general household goods" or something to that effect so avoid being taxed as much.
