    Cheating!!!

    Advertisements

If you haven't heard by now, Ross administration finally decided to take action regarding the Shelves. As students were on break after the Jan-May '09 semester, an email was sent to the students regarding cheating on the Biochem shelf & that grade was to be omitted.
Now, let me put the situation into perspective for you: For years now, 2nd semester students & 4th semester students were required to take the Shelves as part of their final grade for that particular class. The scores were 'double-curved', so it was a guarantee for that student to at least score 60% on the shelf~ ultimately helping those that were barely passing & hurting those that scored A's on previous Mini's.
The funny thing is: When each exam was administered, there were at least 6 professors in each room & when half the classroom finishes their exam within 45 minutes, obviously something fishy was going on. But Ross turned a shoulder...
and if that wasn't a hint: how about looking at the scores for each shelf in particular. If the students were averaging in the 60s and 70s, without the need for a double-curve, on one shelf & scoring a 40% on a different shelf, obviously something was going on!!
More importantly, a year ago the shelves used to be 15% of your final grade. Than it was increased to 20%. After the 'cheating' scandal, Ross has decided to do-away with the shelves completely and give local-final's instead. Further, the newly installed local-finals are now 30% of your final grade...

Now follow through the logic with this...Shelves used to be 15% of your grade, than moved to 20%~ ok, not that big of a deal..meanwhile, the averages on the shelves were in the 40s..than the double-curve was set in place and 60s were handed out & students still failed....So now Ross says, ''Lets make some more money and try to fail the 4th semester kids bc they will obviously come back to repeat..thats an extra 15 grand per student in our pocket''. So they get rid of the shelves (the ones that everyone, realistically, failed) and give local finals that are now worth 30% of their final grade!! Soooo, used to be 15% for an exam that everyone did poorly on, even if they cheated..now changed to 30% to get more kids to fail..this has to be illegal??? not to mention, these exams are all administered within a week, ie: 5 exams, one each day, death via sleep deprivation

Moral of the story, they dont care about the students here. DeVry owns Ross, DeVry is on the stock market, they want your money

please don't become a physician if you can't handle 5 exams in 5 days. what are you going to do as a doctor, "i'm sorry, i've already seen 5 patients today, can't see another until tomorrow because i can't handle more work!"

i'm glad it's not double curved- i don't want to lose points on an exam so failures like you get more points added. if you're so borderline on the MPS that you worry about this kind of stuff, please drop out- you're clearly not intelligent enough. The solution to not failing out due to a final is to not be anywhere near MPS. hit the books, you obviously need it.

    *sigh*

If Ross wanted to make more money by failing students they don't need new tests to do so.

Why does everyone think this conspiracy theory is so original?

Clearly you misread the entire post Narc. I never stated that I was borderline, failing. I was just simply stating the facts. The shelves helped those that were on the fence (some students I knew & wanted to see them pass) and hurt those that scored very high on the mini's. I got 5 A's and 1 B last semester. Is that up to your standards Narc?

Not guaranteed, but you would have to be pretty dumb to not score higher than a 60%. Example: One of my friends bubbled in straight C's and scored a 48%

MINIs are easier than shelfs bc you know exactly what the pofs consider important and what not

The only people this is hurting are the losers that cheat.....Id take a local final over shelfs any day

no, it is not up to my standards- you got a B.

i figured every whiner who complains about not having a shelf is close to failing. tbh, i wish your friends didn't pass, as they clearly don't know the material that well, and were given a gift w/ the shelf curves.

so, since you did so well, how come you're complaining that ross is taking your money? it appears as though in a few years after you graduate, you'll be making multi-$100,000. looks more like THEY'RE giving YOU money, doesn't it?

its actually going to be 5 tests in 3 days, not 5. but i think they are switching it around so that we less time for mini 3 and a lot of days to study for the local finals
