CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CLARIFY THIS? IS IT DUE TO USMLE SCORES, RESIDENCIES, ETC. . . .?

WHY DO I ALWAYS READ THAT ST. GEORGE'S IS MORE PRESTIGIOUS THAN ROSS

St. George's University is a good medical school. Its the oldest of the Caribbean medical schools and they have worked hard to promote it well (ie. canning the phrase: Harvard of the Caribbean). It became well known long before Ross did, largely because of President Reagan.

I would say that they have the most stringent of admissions criteria currently of any offshore school. Some have told me that its relaxed a bit since they have been accepting the largest classes of any Caribbean school, but I don't know much about that.

SGU has consistently had some of the highest pass rates on the USMLE, largely, I think, because of their admissions policies. Also, because of the students they accept, the education the provide, and the scores students receive, their residency list if also quite good each year.

Finally, from the photos, it appears as though they have constructed a nice campus (at least on the outside). Since the tuition at SGU is also quite a ways higher than most other schools, money can go towards scholarships, promotional materials, etc.

Ross University is also a very good school. Do your research and find out which is best for you.

    SGU THE PLANE OLE TRUTH

SGU, ok...maybe it might be the most popular/oldest university in the caribbean, it's not necessarily the best. SGU has established itself as a conventional university, it offers undergraduate degrees and maintains an active research faculty. Now regarding it's USMLE scores, consistency is there, however it's present at Ross also. In evaluating medical schools/universities, research weighs alot, because with it comes recognition from various foundations...etc...like harvard...most of it's prestige comes from research...which leads to more money (grants etc.) therefore more resources to master technology and take it a step further...Anyone ever checked the US NEWS & WORLD REPORT RATINGS OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS...ranking is primarily determined by research grants...not by quality of education...HARVARD #1, PENN STATE #2...now for AAMC...by specialty...quality of education e.g. UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND are among those found topping various list...NOt saying ROSS is the best...but it's turn out rate is higher...more successes in the united states...

    Harvard of the Caribbean

eh...you are comparing apples and oranges by equating SGU with Harvard... or Ross with Univ of N.M....

If you are stuck with going to these schools...focus on getting out...and acing your Step 1. These schools are here to give us med students a second opportunity...take advantage of that.

We end up in U.S. News and World Report more so through our notoriety (Grenada '83...Fl scare '02) than our academic excellence...

    ross vs. sgu

both universities will get you where you want to go, and after looking at the residency lists from the previous 3 years or so, the two schools are quite comparable.

    to answer your question:
sgu puts more effort in being a true 'university.'
sgu has more stringent admission criteria
sgu puts more money into its campus
sgu has the history of regan/grenada 'saving the U.S. medical students'
sgu seems to care more about their students (basic and clinical sciences)

but ross has been known for having super high board scorers.

but the final question is.... for comparable residencies, would you want to pay the extra money - i didn't.

    Ross

SGU is only two years older than Ross. Two years don't really make a difference in respect to prestige. So is SGU is the Harvard of the Caribbean, then Ross must be the Stanford or Yale of the Caribbean.

SGU was made famous due to the Grenada invasion, but all the physicians I have spoken to never have heard of SGU, but have heard of Ross (this is in NYC). So I would refrain from stating that SGU is better than Ross. Currently it may have more resources than Ross (housing, etc), but from the looks of things Ross is catching up. I hear new student housing are in the plans. There are construction projects everywhere, and the admission requirements are being raised. People keep bashing Dominica, but from what I experienced it is a beautiful country. I would say that Ross and SGU are the same. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

    HAHA

This whole argument is too funny ... ofcourse SGU isn't better than ROSS .. just like ROSS isn't better than SABA or AUC or MUA or ST Matthew's etc. ... it's just older thus more degrees thus better representation.. nothing more. Infact Dominica is a nasty little island compared to Granada and even SABA(though I've never been to SABA).

YOU are all going to medical school in the CARIBS. so better accept that now. I can just picture someone saying .. "I went to med school in the caribs but that's OK because I WENT TO ROSS". Give me a break.

    misinformation

    Caribmd,
I suggest you refrain from making comments about Dominica since you haven't been here. I for one think it is beautiful, and a great place to study. That is MY perception, and I can say that because I live in Dominica. Think twice before you speak.

CORRECTION .. I HAVE BEEN THERE! What I said was I haven't been to SABA. Please refrain from trying to correct my opinions for me as I don't try to correct your opinions. I didn't mean to offend you by sharing my opinion about your school as I understand a due loyalty you have to your school. Please excuse me if I hurt your or anyone else's feelings. Regards.
