    MERPed ?

    Advertisements

Has anyone been MERPed with a high GPA (3.7 to 4.0) and a MCAT (20 or below)? I have a 3.9 GPA and 20 MCAT. I am an older student (34), lots of shadowing, volunteer, and leadership experience. I have been looking at all the threads but have not really seen anything with my type of stat ratio. My degree is in Bio, with a minor in Chem. I have all A's in my science courses, pre-req and upper level, except for a B+ in BioChem. I have taken the MCAT twice, 19 the first time and a 20 the second. I have an interview in Jan and was curious who may have gone through this process with similar stats and can give me some feedback. I understand that the responses are merely just someone’s opinion and that the admissions committee can be finicky. Regardless, thanks for anyone’s feedback and I hope we all make it to the island!

based on what I have heard from other merp students currently in the merp class, I think that if you have a great gpa and a not so great mcat, you have a better shot of gaining admission to ross med, vs having a good mcat and poor gpa. From what I heard in class, Ross puts more weight on gpa than the mcat. Alot of people in the merp class had great mcat scores, some with 30's, but its their gpa's that set them back.

MERP is more for people who are specifically weaker in their sciences GPA (like me haha). I think you should be fine. Good luck!

They will also take into account how long you have been out of school too. I had a bunch of older students in my MERP class, just so they could make sure the person could handle the work load.

That is a great point razor! However, I am a returning student and just graduated with my B.S. this month. I agree with your assessment of older students brushing up on their science background. However, for myself, I would not think that type of situation would apply! If feel that placing me in MERP would be a waste of time and money, becoming a redundant repetition of the past 4 years. I would hope my GPA stands for something and counter acts my low MCAT!

was ur overall mcat low or just verbal? i think if its just verbal you might want to go to a review class and work on just that, get at least a 25 and apply to american schools with a 3.9 gpa...also i would say straight admin probably not merp for you. best of luck!

counteract is one word.... have fun in MERP.

I personally think MERP is a money making operation that serves very little educational purpose! but that's just me. If I were you, I would apply to the other big 4 schools and see which one takes you directly and not even bother with MERP. Why spend $10,000+ on a "maybe" when a GPA as high as yours could get you in to SABA, AUC, or even AUA directly... just my opinion.

AND... if you are accepted by one of the other schools, you can use it as leverage to get out of MERP if you are placed in it and go directly to the rock.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I'm having second thoughts about MERP. I got 17 twice on my MCAT. You think I should take some prep courses and try to get direct admissions into Sept or attend April Merp. I wasn't born here so my verbal is extermely low. Thanks
