    why become a doctor

    why become a doctor?

Why do people slave through medical school (despite glowering about the gloomy future of physicians), slave through residency on a salary that is not terrible, but not nearly compensatory compared to other 45k a year jobs.

Medical school is not fun, I don't like studying, but here I am every day, nearly every weekend. I am just now realizing that the only prize I get for passing first semester is the privilege of suffering through second; but I also know that this melancholy pales in comparison to the anguish I would feel if I fail.

Is it an excuse to avoid a normal life? Is it just better than a real job? Is pushing oneself through this torture the ultimate expression of self-loathing or symptom of trying to earn daddy's love? or is there a world of unicorns, kittens, and happy shining faces at the end of the pipeline? Is it a dream of the respect, drama, antics, and glamor that "doctors" on primetime seem to enjoy or just the best I will be able to get out of this world? Are all these useless genes, nerves, and cells just busy work to weed out my peers or am I surreptitiously being shaped into something greater than I was before?

Why? Why? Why? Medical students all seem crazy to me, who would want to do this to themselves? Why am I still doing it? I could still get out, there is hope, I could be happy as an accountant or computer engineer. Why do I stroke myself with these thoughts when I know I am really going to keep going anyway?

When society breakdown, we won't need accountants, we won't need computer engineers, we won't need dentists, we won't even need fast food workers.

    We will need physicians.

The job is more stable than pretty much everything except maybe farmers and prostitution.

I am okay with being paid chicken for my work.

    But...
    I am miserables
    chronicly depressed
    and
cry myself to sleep every Friday.

I think the moaning is a little over-exaggurated (sp?). Either that, or it's from people who really haven't been in the real world. I admit it. I wasn't prepared for college and life after college right after high school.

Being out of school and working full-time for the first time was probably when I grew-up as a person the most.

Think about the worst possible life situation you could find yourself in. I mean, really use your imagination. Think about all the places you've volunteered and worked. Think about the people who really have it bad. Now think about studying and taking tests. It's not even close.

(Hope I don't sound like I'm talking down to people who went to high school --> 4 years of undergrad --> 4 years of grad school. This is just something I really believe.)

edit: I'm not saying "be a doctor because there are worse things in life."

I'm saying that the positives about becoming a doctor grossly outweigh any negatives. And if negatives are being used to drive any conversation about this, the conversation isn't really being put into perspective.

I've only had 3 kinds of jobs.

Lab work - Sit around, browse internet, do some experiment once in a while, wait a few hours for reaction/bacteria to grow, browse some internet, go home.

Secretarial work - Browse internet, type something randomly, browse some porn while no one is looking, photoshop some pictures, uses office supply to print them out, go home and frame it.

Fast food - constantly wonder why everyone else is not fired. Apparently I was the only one there who went to college....

In those jobs, i never had a sense of accomplishment or ever felt satisfied, it was the same day after day. Paycheck day was the only thing that made me smile a little.

Studying may be hard, but when you pass an exam, you feel so good.

I dont know man, but I think I am enjoying the hard work and being in school. Probably cuz I waited a pretty long time for favorable circumstances that would allow me to go back to school.
If you aint got it in your genes, sweat it out.

Accountants and computer engineers don't get babes.... Doctors do. Just drop the "Dr." bomb in their face and your set.

you sound like a friend of mine, though I am sure you are kidding. He used to wear this really lame shirt in school that said "trust me I'm a doctor" He loved playing that card even whilst he was still a medical student. I dislike admitting what I do to people. I dont want to come off as pompous. Most times I just say I work in the hospital. Trust me the reality of medicine is somewhat different than what we starry-eyed medical students imagined

Try sales or any of the " 2 by 4" Jobs.

The reasons I keep studying hard is the fact that you're certain to please most sick people you come into contact with and also progression in your line of work. Imagine working for a company like walmart for years and leaving there and going to another company like Target, chances that they'll give you the same pay or even more are not always feasible. Now replace the medical profession with these two companies and it'll mostly be an upward trend. Consider these jobs, 2 by 4 jobs, and you may think twice about your studies.
