How late can I safely apply for Fall 09 class?

    Advertisements

I'm currently applying to US schools for Fall 2009. If I don't get in, how late can you apply for the Fall 2009 class and still be considered? The admission department didn't really give me much guidance except to say they are currently taking applications for May and Sept 2009 classes. I don't mind the $75 application fee--it's the $1000 non-refundable deposit that I want to avoid paying if I end up going to a US school.

Anybody else playing this game? Thanks for the feedback.

with Ross, it is usually 2 months before the September class starts so mid-July would be the latest. But, you're stretching it because a lot of students are applying every year because they are in the same boat as you and due to the economic downturn, students are much more interested /going into medicine.

By the time January through June 2009 rolls around, you should know your US med school status of being accepted or denied. Always call the school that you applied to when you will get a decision.

I don't know your stats so I have no way knowing your chances for the US med schools.

If I were you, I would apply to Ross right now online for the May or September class as a security blanket. Also, St. George and other Carribean med schools if they meet your clinicals, residency, licensure wishes.

I interviewed in mid May and was waitlisted for Sept. So Sept. does fill up quickly!

Back in '07, I applied in early May, interview the last week of May, and was admitted. However, the lady who interviewed me told me that I was lucky b/c of the 7 people she interviewed that day, only 2 were admitted.....but then again I don't know what the other people's stats were.

A couple of folks asked for my stats. Sorry, I was away for a few days, I wasn't ignoring you. I have a 29S and a 3.9 science, 3.8 overall. I'm an older student and have a graduate degree in clinical social work (I worked as a substance abuse counselor with teenagers and adults) and some shadowing and volunteering at a free clinic.

BTW, I've met a few IM doctors that were in residency who went to Ross and AUC. Both of them were driving pretty nice looking late-model BMW's (a lot nicer than my Hyundai!). I asked them how hard it is to get a residency when you've been to a Carib school and they both said that all of their classmates got top-shelf residencies. That's encouraging.

Also, I got a friend down there in Ross right now who says she really likes it. It is hard to be away from home, she says, but then again, it is hard to live at home and study all the time.

    Good luck to you guys/gals!

Wow, mdhopeful is right on something.

You should start hearing back from your interviews at US schools before april, may next spring right? I think that would be plenty of time to apply if you found out you were rejected then.

I applied in May and got accepted a month later for this september, although I had decent stats. If you had a mcat of 19, I would apply now and just swallow the 1k deposit, but you should be alright. You have plenty of time though, so see what happens with your us app. For saint Georges you might want to apply earlier since they are slow sometimes. I applied to them at the same time as Ross, but didn't get my acceptance phone call until I was literally in the gate area of the Miami airport waiting to board my flight to Dominica. (I asked them if I would qualify for any scholarships and they kept saying that they weren't sure but to submit an application once school started -- so I ended up at Ross.)
