    The Dominica Blacklist

    Advertisements

Did your cleaning person steal from you? Were you grossly overcharged for a service? Did you send your clothes to the laundromat only to have a piece or two of your nicest garments stolen? Have a landlord who charges you outrageous prices yet refuses to fix anything?

Make your fellow Ross students aware of who they can trust and who they cannot.

    This should be a sticky.

I'll start off with Rosie's restaurant on Lizard trail. A few days ago I went to eat there and had a meal clearly priced from the menu at $20. After eating the lady there lets me know that the meal is $30 because she supposedly gave me more food, even though I didn't ask for it. I paid because I saw a few locals looking at me angrily. It appears that there is a reason that only locals eat at Rosies'. I spoke to another student who ate there two weeks prior, and apparently the EXACT SAME THING happened to him.

Let this be a warning to any Ross students.

I don't think so. I specifically pointed to the menu and said I wanted that with nothing extra. Same thing happened to me and a bunch of my friends when we went down to Roseau once, but that was last semester.

Also, my girlfriend recently had a few expensive articles of clothing stolen from a lady who does the laundry around Ross. I'll post her name and number soon when I get back home so no one makes the mistake of giving her business.

Whether your story is truly authentic or not, the main point is the same: if you are not a "local," you WILL be upcharged for items/services mainly because you are "supposed" to have more money than the locals who roll around in Lexus SC400 coupes with BBS rims and kitted-out with a high-wattage stereo system, and they frequently fly to neighboring islands for expensive clothing shopping (you'll notice their glasses are Gucci and their threads are all designer labels). I say this over and over, the island is a SCAM. Best bet is to lay low, stay informed, and limit yourself to "trusted" places/people.
    Good luck.

I couldn't agree more. Anyone else have specific people / businesses on their blacklist? Please share and help prevent your fellow students from being scamed.

Avies - both the old and new apartments - water is iffy, brown and freezing. Internet is either REALLY slow (think worse than dialup) or doesn't work at all. The people who work there really don't care about you once you've signed your lease. Oh and that back up generator . . . . it's a myth. If you're thinking about living at Avies . . . don't.
