    anesthesia residency

    Advertisements

Hey guys, if anyone is applying for or has gotten an anesthesia residency, how far in advance did you apply?
looking at anesthesia programs on Freida it says that for 2010 match i need to apply by the end of november of 2008. is that right? i thought that ERAS did not release your application until sept of the year of the match? I only have done step 1 by this point and have had a couple of rotations, dont they want more experience by the time i apply? also what about letters of rec? i dont have any yet. can someone shed some light on this matter, thanx.

Well to apply for any program, you should have submitted your application on Eras by Sept 1st or 2nd. REMEMBER that for Anesthesia(and some others) there are programs that offer the additional prelim year included (total 4 years) and some that dont (only 3 years straight anesthesia)...so keep that mind when your searching schools. If you want to go for Anesthesia, you NEED that extra pre-lim/intern year, whether its at the same place you got Anesthesia residency or another hospital. If you do ur prelim year elsewhere, you do have to apply to that separately.

You have only had a couple rotations, so have some time which is good. Just start reading the "pre-residency guide" from ross (actually pretty good) and memorize those dates. July 1st is important, as that is the first day you can request your token number (which helps you register for ERAS). In terms of Letters or Recs....ask and try to get them early. It gets kinda crazy towards the deadline, as the ERAS office gets so full of documents and such.

I hope that helps and makes sense, I didnt wanna give too much details and end up confusing both of us...lol but send me a PM if u got any more Q's or something

yeah anesth starts as a pgy-2 residency. so you should be looking at 2011 and find a prelim year for 2010.

the above poster is right though..there are some programs that tack on the prelim in the same hospital, but others don't

just to clarify..the 3 yrs straight doen't mean only 3 years of residency...just means that you have to find a separate prelim year BEFORE you start anesthesia...so when you are applying for those advanced positions, you have to also apply for the intern year separately in the same match year (so prelim yr would start say 2010 and the the anesthesia R-1 year would start in 2011, but you match for BOTH in 2010).

how do these residencies that require a prelim year go? you apply for a prelim year, and then apply again after youre done with the prelim or apply at the same time?

also, how often do you get a prelim through that same hospital/program? do you always have to go out and find your own prelim residency?
If you want to do something, then you will find a way.
If you want to do nothing, then you will find an excuse.
