    Greenbook, Umbrella,...confused

    Advertisements

What does it means when a hospital WITHOUT a greenbook rotation is affiliated with a program/another hosipital that has the green stamp? Would that make that hosiptal WITHOUT the green book rotation have the green stamp? Am i'm thinking this wrong?

I also did a search on the Michagin program, are all the ELECTIVES, not cores, greenbook also? Also, I read that they fall under the Family Practice umbrella? Can somebody explain this umbrella term, i've read so many versions...am i'm wrong on this too???

Either i'm not asking the right people or what, because no one on the island knows...

A BIG THANKS TO ALL THAT REPLIED!

The actual program you are rotating through has to be affiliated with another program which is accredited in the same area. Wyckoff is Green for Pediatrics because it is affiliated with Brooklyn Hospital's Pediatrics Residency program and that affiliation is listed on acgme.org and Freida.

[If you're bored, go to acgme.org/adspublic, look up Brooklyn Hospital and click on it. You'll see Wyckoff Heights Medical Center as an affiliate.]

I also did a search on the Michagin program, are all the ELECTIVES, not cores, greenbook also?

Nope, each individual program has to be formally affiliated with another program in the same area. Don't assume blanket coverage. Among the exceptions are non-Neurology Internal Medicine electives. For example, if a program is accredited in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and GI there are Green but Neurology is not.

Also, I read that they fall under the Family Practice umbrella? Can somebody explain this umbrella term, i've read so many versions...am i'm wrong on this too???

The family practice umbrella (informally "Blue Book" rotation) is not accepted by several states. I put together a list of state licensing requirements here, but it is a first draft. Too busy to fact check it extensively at the moment.

Either i'm not asking the right people or what, because no one on the island knows...

If you're a SGU/AUC student, there's a pretty good chance that all your core rotations are Green. If you aren't, you have to be careful and use acgme.org/adspublic.

Don't let anyone pull the "family medicine umbrella" crap on you, unless they also inform you that you can't practice in a dozen states if you participate in that. And, educate your classmates because disreputable Caribbean schools and some hospital administrators thrive on the ignorance of medical students. And, when in doubt, call your state licensing board - you shouldn't take anyone's word for stuff like this.
