There are a couple of places on the island for getting hair done if you are of African descent (to be PC). However, for us white girls, I had to wait until break and get my hair cut in the states. There's one lady that does waxing, but I'm not sure about mani's and pedi's. Your pedicure won't last walking around on the island.

I think the hair thing has been discussed in other threads. There is a lady across the front gates behind the pharmacy that cuts hair. She's Canadian and can cut non-African American hair. You can get manicures and pedicures and waxing done by a couple of places. The one closes to campus is across the street from RUH. The new place that opened up is right next door to T I N A' S. The prices are very cheap as compared to what you'd pay in the States.

Please have her advertise with the Spouse's Organization - she'll get some great at home business.

just shave your head, cut your nails, and stop waxing. It will save you time and money.

It is nice that you want to look your best, but keep in mind it is a 3rd world nation. I don't think too many people will say much if your toe nails are chipped and dirty. I walk around with sand all over my feet and no one says anything. Half the time I dont shave either. Not because I'm too lazy to shave, well actually, yeah thats probably exactly it, but no one cares. You will still fit in.

The best advice I ever got was written by a guy named Lao Tzu. He is credited for writing the Tao Teh Ching. The whole purpose of Taoism is to "simplify ones life" and it will reduce your stress. I would also like to point out a quote by Einstein "make things as simple as possible, but not simpler". Learn to live without.

If the stress is too much, and you can't lose the feeling that you need to have a manicure/pedicure etc. Read a book by a guy named Paramahansa Yogananda, it's called "the divine romance". Its not a romance novel, but it will give you a whole new perspective on the things that you think are important. Best of luck with finding what you need on the island, and in life.

Just went to Shirley's today - she's on the left side of the road across from RUH. She was super friendly and obviously knew what she was doing. Really cheap as well! Just might go for that Brazilian . . .
