Hey guys, 3rd semester here, just wondering if anyone can break down an exact time line of events, being a 3rd semester in Sept. 2008 semester. For example, when will Miami happen, comp, step 1, when will i start rotations, when is match day, etc. If anyone has a good source of this, it would be really helpful. I'm confused by all of this. Thanks guys, good luck with school.

If you're in 3rd semester in the fall semester, then you will be a 4th semester in January. That means you start 5th semester (Miami if you choose) in May, which is when I started it this year.

You will take your comp during the first week of the Miami semester. If you pass it you're in good shape. You can take the step whenever you want to after the paperwork is done (which takes up to 6 weeks after you get a passing comp score) as long as you take it within 6 months of passing the comp. So if you pass the comp the first time, then your window for the step will be from the start of June until the end of November. You must take it during that time.

If you fail the comp the first time (which many of us do) then you will sit for it again in September. However, they offered an early comp this semester that was in August. If you pass the comp in September, then your eligible time to take the step will be from the beginning of October until the end of March.

After you take the step, you will wait 3-6 weeks for that score during which time you can go home and party. When you get your score, send it to the registar, who sends it to the clinical department for you. They will come up with a clinical schedule for you. They say that takes about a week but it varies. You start rotations when they have scheduled you. This really varies by student and availability of rotations but from what I've been told, people have started anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks after getting their schedule.

Graduation and match depends on how quickly things move. For my semester, some people took the step during 5th, in an attempt to start rotations immediately and make the 2010 match. However, this is going to be difficult for most and the majority of us will match in 2011. You can "graduate" after you finish your rotations during one of three times during the year, but there is only one graduation ceremony in June of each year. Residency programs usually start around July.

Hope this helps you somewhat, but keep in mind that you will learn more and more about this as you go along. Take it one step at a time. During 4th semester Dr. C will probably come and do an info session and Q&A. Then during 5th semester the people from NJ will come and explain the rest of the process and hand out some written-down information. Focus on 3rd for now but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead. Best of luck!
