    1 Hour Layover - rechecking?!

    Advertisements

I already searched and there weren't any recent topics on this so I'm posting one.

I fly US Airways from Providence to Charlotte to San Juan to Antigua to Dominica. I have a 1 Hour layover in San Juan for my liat flight to Antigua and want to know if I have enough time to go through customs, recheck and get to my next flight. I realize its kind of a roll of the dice but any info is very helpful.

I was thinking of shipping my stuff and then thought even if my checked bags (not carry on's) didn't make it to Dominca until the next day or two it would be easier and cheaper than shipping. What do you think?

You wont have to go through customs in San Juan on your way to Dominica. One hour is cutting it real close since you are going to have to go through baggage claim, check in for your liat flight, and then go through security. If your flights were bought under one ticket, then your bags should automatically be sent to Antigua.

I a alos flying out of Charlotte, but I am going to Miami then to San Juan, to Dominica. My travel agent told me that 1 hour was not enough. Actually I think I have to over night in San Jaun. Just try to hurry!

You won't have to go through customs in San Juan, it's part of the United States. Unfortunately you are flying US Airways. They are almost never on time. I flew with them at least 15 times in the past 2 years and never once managed to make it anywhere on time (if I had really had a choice, I would have picked a different airline). Even if you do get there when you're supposed to, it can take forever to get your bags. So in short, it can be done, but it is going to be a serious gamble. Good luck
Then again, I like to think of anything stupid I've done as a "learning experience." It makes me feel less stupid. PJ O'Rourke.

You will Absolutly NOT make your flight unless the Liat flight is very delayed. I had the exact same situation going in for my fourth semester (bought ticket through cheap-o-air) this is the deal. Since you are not taking United the whole way you will have to collect your bag at the terminal - takes about 10 minutes, then you need to check in at the Liat desk, which is outside of security, before comming back in to make your flight. This isn't customs, mind you, but it is security which can take anywhere from almost no time to about 45 mintues. Also note this. Liat overbooks all of their flights, if you are not there 45 mintues from take off (meaning checked in) they give your seat away to one of the overbooked flights. This gives you exactly 5 mintues to get from baggage claim, to the Liat desk, to the front of the line (and keep in mind the speed of Liat employees) Last year I literally watched them give my seat away to the people at the front of the line while I yelled frantically. Ended up spending 2 nights in the PR hotel, waiting for standby until I eventually did the same thing to a fellow student (Im assuming) who was also late for their flight. Please, please dont take this lightly. It was one of the worse experiences for me, and I wish it on no one else.

Ok, so I don't have to go through customs in San Juan. I do however have to get a Liat flight so I need to recheck baggage in an hour time slot. If however if I don't have time to recheck my bags what will happen to them? just stay there or be sent later on?

Anyone know if US airways has a baggage agreement with Liat??

If I were in your position I would consider seeing if I can either:
    1) get on a flight that lands earlier or take a later flight from San Juan.
2)Negotiate with Liat to get on the next days flight and plan on spending one night. This way you at least have a ticket. If your ticket is given away because you were not there 45 minutes before your flight embarked you are not given any preference when you stand in line for standby the next day. Trust me, with the paucity of flights to Dominica, you will not be the only one on standby.
I would take preparation over luck when dealing with my sanity and education any day of the week.
