    DeVry/Ross not building enough infrastructure

    Advertisements

I am a first semester here and am really getting annoyed with the lack of infrastructure here at Ross.

Ross is letting way, way, way too many people into their med program and not having enough infrastructure to support them. They first of all do not have enough rotation sites to accomodate all the students graduating from the expanded classes. I shudder to think what will happen when a class that originally started with close to half a thousand students graduates and tries to find clinical sites to rotate at. And 3 people to handle every graduate from every semester? Thats ridiculous. They need to at LEAST triple that amount. The above is the biggest that thing that has the most affect on our future success.

The second is study space. The squatting at Ross is horrendous. People take up ENTIRE rooms at ross, dump their stuff, and then leave for hours on end or even overnight. You can see all the cubbies in the library are like home to some of these people. They will bring desk lamps, picture frames, sweaters, candy bars, etc and just dump them there. Basically acting like they OWN the cubby. They leave this stuff there overnight basically denying anyone else the opportunity to study there. Whats even worse is that Ross is now making some of the classrooms and study rooms open to the public. Today, I was studying, and they had a "religious song group" come in and start singing and playing guitar. Isn't the point of the study room to study? Can't these people go somewhere else to do their thing - like the SGA or the break room next to Subway? 15 people had to get up and leave because their studying was disturbed.

The third is the restrooms here. I know some of you tough guys will say to suck it up and clean up other's messes or just live with it, but these standards wouldn't pass OSHA. The urinals stop working after midnight. You basically have to hold the handle down on the urinals for a min or so to make it flush (probably something designed to save them money on water). And I hear that the reason for this is so that the septic tank is not overloaded. Does anyone else think that is absurd? The bathrooms become non-functional because the septic tank is overloaded? You would think they would buy an extra septic tank to accomodate the increase in hundreds of more students.

Finally, the lack of gym space. There are a total of 6 - 7 cardio machines to be shared amongst 1500 students or so. One or two are almost always broken down. Suffice to say that students would not be able to work out unless they go really late at night, really late in the morning, or skip class to go work out.

I don't understand why Ross isn't building the infrastructure to keep up witht the increase in students. It seems like DeVry is going to run Ross under and basically kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Ross will lose its spot as #2 in the Carribean (if it already hasn't) to AUC and pretty soon here to SABA and SMU.

Really, its a very easy fix for the infrastructure.

BUILD A BIGGER AND BETTER LIBRARY
    BUILD MORE STUDY ROOMS
BUILD A ROOM FOR PUBLIC FUNCTIONS
    BUY AN EXTRA SEWAGE SYSTEM
    BUY MORE EXERCISE EQUIPMENT

I hope some of your Ross people read this, because if these things aren't done, Ross will keep getting worse and worse.

They are in the process of constructing several new buildings including a new gym and a space for groups to meet that AREN'T classrooms. Also, there are plenty of classrooms, that are usually less than half full, to study in. The squatting is annoying though. If you notice peoples items unattended in the same spot for more than an hour (the definition of squatting according to Ross) then move them. Better yet, report the items lost to security. That should help solve that problem both of opening up a spot AND removing the items without throwing them out or loosing them. Also, the other groups that are allowed to use the space for their meetings, the times are e-mail out to us through the Ross e-mail, just make sure you're not going to be in one of those spaces at one of those times.

I know the solution, bring in old cargo containers to use for classrooms! Oh wait a minute that is what they did to make their new Biochem dept structure.

Ross is a business, get used to it. The school isn't gonna spend any more money than it ABSOLUTELY has to. You think Walmart is what it is today by listening to its employees? Ross/Devry have shareholders who don't give a crap whether you can take a crap in a clean bathroom, they wanna get paid. If you can put 600 students in a room that fits 500, in the business world they call that a good year. If you think you can get admin to budge on theses issues, keep dreaming. You are just as expendable as 'Frank' the front-door greeter at my local Walmart. There are 1000's of students who want your spot and Ross knows it. If feel for ya, but you gotta suck it up and enjoy the RU screw.

A solution to your problem...pay a bit more for a decent apartment with a decent generator and problems 1-4 are solved.

Exercise: it's an island for goodness sake...i'm sure you can find something "outdoor" to do to keep active!"

note: these are what I did, back in my day.

I see your concerns in a way... Ross should be a little more stricter on class size... It reminds me of the University of Phenoix Online MBA program... The university of phenoix is a diploma mill, and if Ross keeps increasing class size that will be a huge problem come future clinical spots since U.S. schools are expanding also...

didnt you post here about a year ago under a similar username and then got banned because all you did was subtly bash the school nonstop?

anyhow it might have been someone else..

the only advice I have to you is worry about studying instead of all this crap..your here for 16 months..its not a very long time..it flies by..and all the talk about ross losing its spot and what not is ridiculous..nobody cares about the basic science portion of the school..your just taking up space until you write and pass step 1
