Just wondering if anyone has any tips.. like "Don't eat mountain chicken."
Anything you didn't bring but wish you had or did bring and were glad?

There are several of these "what did you bring that you were glad to have brought" threads that popped up in the past. A search will reveal a chock-full of items that you can consider to bring/not bring. Dont bring a white coat, it will be useless until 4th (assuming you make it that far). Dont bring an ophthalmoscope...better yet, dont even BUY one because honestly you will NEVER EVER USE IT...and those things are EXPENSIVE! Save that few hundred for books/clothes or something else that you can buy. There are plenty of rich kids on the island who have money to blow on items such as those, become their friend and borrow their ophthalmoscope for the 1-2 times you will ever use it.
    Good luck.

Yes, you need a SHORT white coat for the ceremony. The same one you'll be using in 3rd and 4th semester.

you do need a opthalmoscope / otoscope kit to use during 4th semester. but yes, don't buy it now a Short white coat is used for the white coat ceremony, but you don't have to go if you don't want to. You will be required the lab coat in 3rd and 4th. And although you might be able to borrow one, you NEED ONE for 5th semester, no sharing there!

Is it better to buy one there or buy it here and bring it with you? Does it need to have the Ross name on it? If so how do you get it on there if you buy one and bring it with you?

    Thanks

If your parents are coming down with intentions of attending your white coat ceremony, then go to it. Otherwise, the ceremony is really just a waste of time. Unfortunately, due to the fact that Ross is in Dominica and many of our family members cant just come down to attend, it really doesnt hold a lot of significance for us and is done just to comply with what US schools do (in my solid opinion). The white coat ceremony is NOT just ONLY for yourself, its for your family members to see you enter the world of medicine also.

Since you will require a white coat anyway, may as well bring it down with you. Buy it in the US, it will be much cheaper. Do NOT put on the Ross patch, just use a plain white one. You will regret having the ross patch on there in the future (when you rotate with some of the arrogant US students), and when you go to take step2cs, it will also be an issue to have it covered. People usually already have the patch on the coat if the coat was provided by the school/institution or students actually buy and apply the patch if they're really proud of their medical school's name. If you want, go ahead and put it on if you're really proud of Ross' impeccable name (yah, its up there with Harvard).

After all, its like cars...who wears hats/jackets etc that bear the name "Kia" or "Hyundai?"...unless you were really proud of it.

This is what I already stated...I didnt deny the fact that you may need the opthalmoscope but you dont need to BUY one becuase you will NEVER use it AGAIN (after those one or two times you use it in ICM or whatever). Just borrow it from someone else. In our ICM group, only like two people had one and everyone would borrow it from them during the ICM labs in front of the professors
    Good luck.

You will need a white jacket for 3rd semester clinical skills class and a few clinic visits or you will get an "f" for professionalism.

The "opscope" is expensive but also takes quite a while to learn to use properly, and if you happen to be asked to do an eye exam on a patient in your 4th semester lab final and do not do it properly you risk damaging your score.

I suggest saving a few bucks by avoiding beer or cigarettes or drugs, whatever addiction you can lose. If you don't have an addiction, borrow an "opscope" from a student who has one (addiction or scope). If you spend one less dollar a day at the shacks you could buy a white jacket and "opscope" and avoid diarrhea.

Bring a prescription for any anti-parasitic medication you can tolerate, but only if you want to lose the worms you might get.

Bring a bar of soap and wash your hands after you use the bathroom, unlike 99.9 % of the students.

Bring your own coffee. I don't want you to try to drink mine.
