    AOA on ERAS?

    Advertisements

What is AOA? Is there AOA chapter at Ross? I came across this as I started filling out my ERAS. I know I am late, but things just didn't work out earlier. Can someone please tell me this?

If you have to ask, then you're not in it...but hey, neither am I.

When I was on the island, I personally tried getting a Ross chapter for AOA. There is 1 program outside USA that has been permitted to establish a chapter. I think it is in one of the countries in europe.

Anyway...I was REJECTED! There main reason...."your school is not LCME accredited..."

After that..i was like ...whatevaaa...screw them....

    It is unfortunate....but true....

It is like a monopoly.....that is for the elite few....even some US allopathic schools are not part of AOA.

well not quite. some schools like harvard do not believe in aoa. so on transcripts if youre from one of those schools there is a note to program directors that they dont have aoa so dont worry if the student isnt a memeber. but its not tht they're not allow; they jsut dont want it. sgu has its own honor society but no one in the real world cares about it.

not true- there is ONE non-lcme chapter - American University in Beirut - it was granted alpha chapter status in 1958 and still exists.

    how it works

Here's how it works at least at my youngers sons school. At the end of the second year the curent AOA members vote it somewhere between 7-10 students to AOA. The students must have a straight "A" average and have done other noteworthy things. At the end of the 3rd year the top 25% of the class is eligible for AOA but only 15% will be elected by the current members. The criteria is grades, resarch, community volunteer work and probably a good rapour with the current members who are voting.

After being elected to AOA I personally kn ow someone who is now doing aresidency in Thorasic Surgery at a top New York Hospital who actually recived info from many top hospitals looking for him to do residencies.

Surely beats applying through ERAS etc. I guess its an advantage of being a top US MEdical student.

Hope this helps answer the questions on AOA
When you become my age you will realize all of the hard work and studying was worth the effort.
"60 years young" another 60 to go if my doctor sons keep me alive with free prescriptions!!
