    phone service on the island

    Advertisements

i am trying to figure out the phone situation and so far have been getting conflicting information
    1. Can i buy phone cards in the US to use on the island and will they work with a cell phone i will buy there?
    2. How does the phone work from the room: Do you use calling cards or do they give you a good deal on international calls?
    3. Can i buy an answering maching on the island?
    4. Any other suggestions for frequent phone use?

Vonage, US number, unlimited calls home. Prepaid cell for the island. Most places offer or have internet. This info is second hand, i start in may. If any current students can add to this please do. I know RUH has a VOIP phone plan and there a number of different services on the web. Do a search there is a ton of info on the forum from old post.

    1. I am unsure if US landline phone cards will work here, I have not tried it. As for cell phones, I'm going to have to go with no. I am quite sure that you have to buy phone cards locally to be used with the cell phone network in Dominica. I don't use a cell phone here, but I heard that it costs about 90cents/min to call the US from a cell and it costs 17cents for the US to call you. This may not be 100% accurate though.

    2. The local internet company offers VOIP service. For a monthly fee of about US$30, you can get unlimited calls to the US and Canada. The problem with this though, is that the internet is usually not very reliable. If you are absolutely dependent on calling home every day, I would be sure to have at least two methods of doing so. Don't rely on the internet service!

    3. You can probably find an answering machine if you search long enough. But I'm sure you will pay an arm and a leg for it. You shouldn't need an answering machine though. Nobody has landline telephones in thier apartments. Either use your cell phone or get VOIP (with voicemail service included).

    4. Vonage does work down here. However, you should purchase your equipment before arriving on the island. Don't expect anything to get shipped here in a reasonable amount of time. The service works fine for the price you pay ($25/month). Again, the only concern is that the internet quality is often poor, leaving you with no communication with the rest of the world. But if you can tell your family that you may only talk to them once a week, this would work out fine for you.

Also, if you don't want to purchase Vonage before you arrive, you can sign up for the local VOIP service when you get here. They can give you a US number with unlimited calling. It costs only slightly more than Vonage does.

    Skype?

Anyone have luck with Skype on the rock?
We've been using it here in the states to call my inlaws in Chicago and my sister-in-law in Africa and it been pretty good(a little video lag). Its free to chat on-line, but you can also get local(US ph#) for in calls and can call out for pretty low rates.

word...I have vonage, but I'm never home and the internet service in my apartment is so spotty, that I hardly use it more than once a week. You have to buy Vonage and set it up in the US and then bring it down. Sometimes, I just use the prepaid cell phone to call home, and it costs $1.60EC/min.

Yes, exactly. You set up vonage in canada or in the US, obtain a canadian area code of your choice so your folks can call you at local rates not long distance. You receive the modem preprogrammed with your phone number. Plug into the modem an ethernet cable feeding high speed internet on one end and a regular phone on the other end and you are ready to go.
24.99 plus tax a month gives you unlimited calls plus a ton of features.
You can still call back the US and canada. All you need is the high speed internet which you will need to get on your own. you can drag the modem anywhere in the world and just as long you are plugged into a high speed internet line you will be good to go. It's like you never moved.
The distance between success and failure can only be measured by one's desire.
Most people see things and ask why? I dream of thing that never were, and ask why not?
