I just finished NGH beginning of June and would like to share my experience, so here's how it goes:

No more than 4 students are assigned to this site each cycle. During the 6 weeks you spend 1 week in C/L (consult-liasion), 2 weeks in MICA unit (Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted) and 3 weeks in Psych unit. In Psych/MICA you will follow a PGY1/2 and in C/L a PGY 3/4. Students do not write official progress notes to be placed in chart however they expect you to know enough about your patient to be able to present during rounds. 1 patient write-up is due at the end of C/L, MICA and Psych and 1 power point presentation is due at the end of Psych, hence 3 writeups & 1PP. There's an assigned textbook for the rotation where you will be given assigned readings before coming to lectures. There's also a midterm and final exam given. Tip for that: study the handouts and you will at least pass.

Hours are 9-4:30. After seeing your patients, attending rounds and lectures, there's alot of free time during the day. The students and I usually hung out in the library and caught up on reading. The chief resident required us to be present till sign out rounds (4:30) then were dismissed however that 'may' change when the new chief starts in July.

Other than that the everyone's real nice to you when you're nice to them. And a plus is, the drug reps sponsor catered lunch at least once a week and they give away real cool pens!

    ....

Was scheduled to start psych here 9/3 but changed it to a different location... however, the chief resident sent me an email with the schedule so i thought i would pass it along... schedule is 9-5 or 8-5 depending on what unit you are on... you switch every two weeks. You are required to do 4 calls until 9pm and one weekend call from 9-5. Three patient writeups, and one powerpoint presentation. You meet one on one with the attending every week to discuss your performance... and there is a final exam. Sounds like alot of work, but a good structured program. Good luck for those doing it here.. the commute was going to be too much for me.

I just finished my psych rotation here. You spend 3 weeks on the psych inpatient unit, 2 weeks on chemical addiction, and 1 week with a consult service. Schedule is actually more like 9 am to whenever your last afternoon lecture is, can vary between 2 pm to like 5 pm, more often earlier than later. I never met with attendings to evaluate my performance, so I'm not sure what thats about. There's three patient write-ups due, one for each unit, which dont take much time to do. Theres also a midterm and a final, which are pretty tough, but I dont think they factor into your grade too much. There is one powerpoint and one informal talk you will have to do. Free lunch at least once a week. Great program if youre interested in psych, if not, its pretty laid back and the main drawback would be the amount of hours you actually have to be there. Calls are as described, some residents will let you leave early if you want. All the "homework" isnt as time consuming as it may sound. Recommended.
