    IMED and ECFMG accreditation

    Advertisements

    Hi,

I have a question for those in romania who will attempt to pass the USMLE (steps). I was looking at IMED repertory and it only classifies the Romanian language section of the medical school.

I am in an english section of a romanian medical school and I would like to know if I am still elligible to pass the steps ? I'm EU citizen.

    Thanks for your answers

I would contact IMED directly. To my knowledge they are not very proactive about updating their information.

I do know that Carol Davila Bucharest is listed (I just checked).

actually it's special , in Oradea for instance there is no "english section" , you can this is just the teaching language but in status , only exists a "general medicine section" with the same diploma at the end; nothing can differenciate them and even you can go from one section to another when you want (at least when UE citizen)
And the univ beeing listed everywhere including Californian boards ...

I already wrote to IMED but no answers yet.

Concerning oradea, can you tell me where it is written that oradea is Californian accredited for the both section because I checked on IMED and it is only in romanian language.

Perhaps you have more updated informations than me.

Thanks for the answers both of you.

    yes , the answer is that there is no english section , english is just one of the 2 media you can choose for learning , and you can switch from one to another ;you get graduated from Romanian section ;
Many students validate steps here so I suppose this is true !

California will only recognize the Romanian section, regardless of what is on the diploma. If they inquire of the University when checking your degree, what will the University say? I would be very cautious if you want to practice medicine in California. Also do you want to take the chance that they find out several years later and yank your license (or worse)?

One of the things I love about Romania is that there are not such strict rules, and they are for the time being somewhat bendable especially if you know the right person. From what I know, the same cannot be said for California.

    Hi,

So you confirmed that only romanian section is accredited.
I'm not particularly interested to pratice medicine in california but what about the other states ?

What do you mean by romania don't follow such strict rules.
Do you advise me to avoid studying in romania if I want to pass the Steps later ?
I'm very confused by now. Both of you had complete different opinions.

Is there someone here fraduated from an english section in romania who passed the Steps and is now doing a residency in US ?

    Thanks for your answers.

no , you don't have to avoid Romania. Teaching here is more UE oriented and few students prepare USMLE but it's possible of course to succed , like everywhere , and actually , like everywhere they give you material and lectures and you do your own level

Craiova does in fact have a good reputation from what I've been able to gather. As you say they have only the Romanian language program. But the University seems to be well respected.

My understanding is that California is the only state with separate accreditation requirements. That is, you should be able to practice in any of the other 49 states. I do suggest you get in touch with IMED & the respective states' medical boards to confirm. That being said, if you don't care to practice in California, then I think the language will not be a problem for you. Just confirm with IMED regardless of which university or program you choose. I would do this no matter where I was going to school.

My earlier comment was a jab at California- it wasn't meant to knock Romania at all. I do think it will be more difficult to take the Steps exams because the audience is mostly graduates from American universities. You will also be competing against US graduates for your residency. That being said, it's certainly possible. I had a friend who knew someone that did this several years ago.

Just as an aside, I would reccomend visiting the universities you are interested in. There are big differences between Romanian cities. Craiova for example is like a totally different country compared to Cluj.

I spoke with an ECFMG official today, who stated that the language medium of the program does not matter. All that matters is that the school is listed in the relevant directory, and that the award of the diploma can be verified by the school upon the request of ECFMG.

    Regards,
    Ron
