Good info on studying in Romania, Cluj "Iuliu Hatieganu" Specifics

Hi everyone, I'm a 2nd year student at the Cluj Napoca University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Iuliu Hatieganu" English Section. I am a citizen of USA, of Romanian background. I was also able to get my Romanian citizenship and national ID. I know Romanian well. I normally live in Houston Texas, and go to school in Cluj. I have seen much confusion around the forums regarding studies in Romania, specifically at UMF "Iuliu Hatieganu" in Cluj.

I can help clarify some of this info through my experience.

    Small Q&A about myself:

Q: Why am I here to study in Romania?
A: The cost of Medical School in the USA is ridiculous (more than $30,000 per year tuition). Also I am Romanian born (left romania when i was 7). Additionally I have wonderful parents that are paying for my brother and me to go here.

Q: Have I done any schooling in USA?
A: I did 3rd grade to 5th grade at an elementary school. 6th grade - 8th grade at a Junior High School. 9th grade - 12th grade at a High School (graduation rank #52 out of ~620 students). I also did 2 years of a Biology degree at University of Houston (unfinished). University of Houston cost around $7000-$10,000 per year.

Q: Am I in the healthcare field in the USA?
A: Yes of course, I am a current Pharmacy Technician at Kingwood Medical Center. Much contact with American doctors. I work there on school vacations, summer (3 months) and winter (1 month). I have a great boss that keeps me hired there.

Q: Do I plan to move back to the USA and be a doctor there?
A: Definitely yes. I plan to do a residency in Ophthalmology, God willing.

If anyone has other questions, please ask.

Ok so now that you all know me a bit better, I'm going to explain all about Medical Schools in Romania, and how I applied to and attend the "Iuliu Hatieganu" school in Cluj.

    To apply I needed:

-Passport of course (make about 10 copies of it),
-Some passport size photos of yourself (8 or so),
-A few notarized (legalized) copies of your birth certificate (and your original),
-Official sealed high school transcript (they didn't use mine, but its one of the requirements),
    -Original high school diploma,
-Any kind of physical examination (sealed).. a paper saying you're healthy signed by a doctor is fine.. that's how mine was (simple physical: vitals, reflexes, declaration of diseases, medications you're on.. etc)
-Few copies of parents' birth certificates

I am of Romanian descent, so the Romanian Ministry of Education gives any proven Romanian descendant (even born abroad) 33% off the original price.

Medical School, Dentistry, and Pharmacy (only in Romanian in Cluj) each cost $3,600 per year.

If you are Romanian descent, you pay $2400 per year. I also don't have to pay a visa because I got my documents done.

***My school secretary submitted and took care of all my "Acceptance Letter" for going to school in Romania. ****This might have changed since there are very many people going to this school now.

I have attached the APPLICATION FORM.pdf to apply to the Romanian Ministry of Education for ALL SCHOOLS in Romania.

****ATTENTION! Knowing English is enough to learn, and live in Cluj. Knowledge of Romanian is NOT needed. You will learn Romanian by taking Romanian Language as part of the curriculum.

I have also included some info about studying in Romania (study_in_romania.pdf) with loads of good info on schools, prices, and procedures. Also included is info to schools and addresses to Romanian embassies of your country to where you can get info about acceptance.

    Any questions, JUST ASK.

    Good Luck!

romanian embassy say they give as only one acceptance letter.
so, I should decide which uni shall I go.

do you find any differnce between umf cluj and umf iasi?

The biggest difference I would know is that Cluj is a nicer city. It is easier for very foreign foreigners to live and get around here. Second, I hear that UMF Cluj is one of the best in the country. Other than that, I have no further experience with Iasi.

actually when you apply to MEC in bucarest , you have to choose the city you want to study , because they give only 1 acceptance letter
but this letter doesn't garanty you a seat in the univ , e.g. cluj is the most wanted school and last year was saturated ; next fall we suppose will be 1 chance/3 to be accepted (it is a selection based on your "files")
less asked is oradea , cause there is an entrance exam (very easy , just a formality actually) and this discourage people
I recall reading on this forum somewhere that Sibiu no longer has an English program. Can anyone comment on that? I just got to Romania and now I'm doubting whether to visit Sibiu or not

    Thanks

h**ps://imed.faimer.org/ replace "**" with tt UMF Cluj is listed there.

Also on a side note, UMF Cluj is saturated and WILL have an entrance exam for foreign students in 2009.
Straight from the CA Board's website:
    medbd.ca.gov/applicant/schools_recognized.htm

If the above is accurate, then none of the English programs in Romania are recognized by CA.

What is the entrance exam expected to look like? Will it be similar to the exam that Romanian citizens take to receive a free seat? Is this for the English section only, or is the Romanian section full as well (and in which case, will the exam be given in English, or Romanian?). Since I want to apply to the Romanian section, I am going to have to take the 1 year Romanian language course since I cannot speak/hear well enough by any means. But if the admission exam is in Romanian then I don't know what I'll do

Hi ! I was in cluj in 2006-2008 and confirm that it is now saturated, about 1 seat for 5 appliances
I am still co-administrator of french section forum Connexion
no entrance exam!! so your admission will be a complete hazard and they usually wait till the last moment to tell you that you are not admitted ...
best doing another safer choice for lettre of acceptance (oradea , constanta)

Hi ! I moved from cluj because their reputation is only justified for Romanian sections , english and French section isn't the same at all...
personnaly I needed to have pharmacology and morphopathology finished at the end of 3d year but in cluj they share it with 4th and 5th year too , so that any transfert is then possible to other schools
and you can't even know how they don't care about european students ! next year will be 5000€ fees whereas in oradea we pay the same than romanian (between 600€ and 1200€)
the fact they don't make a entrance exam is going to condamn future recognition of the school , because the diploma is not obtained in the same conditions than romanian students and so doesn't complies with the standards laid down in Article 24 of the Directive 2005/36/EC ... it's just a question of time that European commission realises this
as far as I know , oradea is the only one to put an entrance exam (really easy , actually it's just here to dissuad lazy people to apply) , so I came to Oradea ..
here about 5 Swedish and the same from Norway per class..

Chapelier, do you know what the fees will be for the students that currently pay in USD for school? If it gets anywhere more than $3000 per semester, I'd rather go to the Caribbean, where I'll be close to home and I'll have a chance to do clinicals in English in the States.

now fees will be 5000€ from next year in cluj, and 250€ for application fees directly paid to university (non refundable)
But you will probably not have your entrance , this year they expect approximativly 1000 files for 150 seats
Oradea is quieter compared to cluj, and all 6 years are in english (cluj , bucarest and Timisoara only 3 years), more chances to get the seat contact ramona coita , say nicolas recommanded you [email protected] & [email protected][dot]ro do the right choice , you can only apply for 1 acceptance letter ... from this year I you fail your entrance in cluj you cannot try another

    Hi Chapelier...

I am also interested in Cluj, and so far I have been reading on a number of education website that the fees are 3600$ per year everywhere in Romania, but you say that the fees are 5000€ + 250€ application fee. Is it a recent change? Does it apply to entire Romania or only to Cluj?
