Does age matter for residency match?

    Advertisements

If I attend med school right now, I'll be around 37 by the time I graduate.
Do you think that there will be a problem for this kind of stituation?

I don't see why that would be a problem. There might be a problem if you'd be 73.

I heard that it is harder for people who are in their later 30's to match with residency....due to age discrimination...is that true?

No age cannot be a factor in determing you eligibilty for residency. The thing you what to do is rock the boards (usmle), that is the most important and will ultimately determine you status for residency. Good luck and don't give up

That's not necessarily the case. Physically demanding residencies may prefer a younger candidate to an older one. An older candidate needs to demonstrate that he/she is just as "fit" and able to handle the work as a younger one.

This is all about perception, not reality. If one can convince the PD that one is just as fit and energetic (and perhaps wiser) as the person in the mid-20s it may not matter. However, some PDs may simply count this as a strike against an older candidate.

The other part that may play a part is that older candidates (generally speaking) have family commitments. Not all residencies are "family-friendly".

    Guys,
I am 42 and just joined FP residency. Most of my colleagues are between 37 and 45! There was one 50 years old, just graduated and has joined Geriatrics fellowship.
Don't consider age as a hindrance to fulfill your dreams. USA doesn't discriminate someone because of age.Even if you graduate now, you will not be considered an old graduate, as your year of graduation will be recent one.
Hope this helps and Good Luck.

    To Dr. Shekhar

Good to know that age doesnt matter in residency. But can you give me an idea which programs accept old, old graduates. I had applied to 60 IM programs, only 1 interview in IM. Good scores, but because of my years since graduation is 15 years, they have kept me on hold. Can u guide me pls
