does anyone know how to pursue an anesthesiology residency as IMG? I mean what kind of steps you have to follow starting from Usmle? Second is it difficult entering an anesthesiology residency in USA?
    Thanks for all your help

You can search all the residency programs, including anesthesiology, at http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html . This site also will tell you what steps and what requirements you need to apply for anesthesiology.

My friend said that anesthesiology is competitive right now. It goes in a cycle. It all depends on how US grads choose their specialties. A couple of years ago anesthesiology was not that appealing to them anesthesiology specialty was very easy to get in--in fact most of them are IMG. Not now.

    What are my chances?

Hi, I'm a US IMG, scored 226 in Step 1 , I'm about to take step 2 CS and CK soon and have no clinical rotations/research/LOR yet. I really want anesthesiology as specialty. Can I still pursue my dream?..... Is it better to do clinical rotation or research? Thanks!!!

You are probably going to need a LOR from an anesthesiologist and preferably one from a PD at a teaching hospital if possible. You don't need to be seen as the smartest just hard working. Are you sure, you want to take Step 2 before any clinical rotations? it is more clinically based.

To get Anesthesiology (Gas) you will need to....
Do well on the Steps - not exactly sure what kind of scores, but I'm thinking 220's and above.
Do a few gas electives - connections are super important when it comes to applying.
    Get good LOR's - preferably from PD's, Chief's.
Apply to as many programs as you can - cast a wide net, and remember to have BACKUP applications to less competitive fields such as IM, FM...
If you get the opportunity to do some research, TAKE IT. - even if this means working late nights after your rotations, it will show you have a definite interest in the field.

Show interest during your rotations, work hard, and be likeable, reliable and know your stuff, these guys know that if they select you they will have to work along side you for the next few years.

See here http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty.pdf for the program director survey which outlines what PD's look for in an applicant for a given specialty.

    Good luck!

NEVER get a LoR from a resident, even if they are the chief one.

How are you taking CS and CK without any rotations or clinical experience. Aren't you supposed to have completed a year of cores by this point? Can one learn "CS" clinical skills out of a book. Books are enough for that assessment?

And if thats the case, how do you know anesthesia your dream?

    Adding
unless of course you mean no experience "in anesthesia"....
