    Programs starting PGY-2

I'm an IMG - well almost - and there's one thing I don't quite understand about the programs that start as PGY-2
    my question is:
if I apply to a 3-year program that requires a preliminary/transitional year does that mean that if I match they'll sign me up for the NEXT year and I'll have to match for a second program to do the PGY-1?
or are those programs only for people who are already IN their PGY-1 ?
    Could someone please explain?
    Thank you

    no prelim yet!!

    Advertisements

Hey guys! I am in the situation you're talking about - I secured a PGY II through the SF Match for Neuro in very good university program, but no prelim yet!! - Pretty stressfull...the program for neuro is very good, however most of the scramble position did not care whether I had secured pgy II or not, especially in NY, which I find ridiculous. They had set a straight forward requirements and the coordinators were throwing my application in the trash, b/c i did not meet them most of the times.... I have attempts in the steps and that's killing me. I was faxing my offer letter showing my secured pgy II, but very few program replied and I'm interviewing next week at one community hospital...so I'm keeping my spirits up. However, do not let yourself ending up like me - if you did not match in prelim/transitonal, immmediatly notfiy your progam monday, before scramble begins, which i did on the second day - too late!!! Anyway, good luck to you!!

    prelim

    Hi,

What if someone gets a prelim PY1 lets say in Surgery primary this year but no advance match(in surgical specialities).then if one takes and does preli year,do i have to reapply next year for both PG2 advance match as well as prelim PGY1 again,or former PGY1 will work.

I am confused regarding the technical relationship between PGY1 and advance match. Please let me know.appreciate

Can FP be used as the PGY-1 year if you leave your program?

The way I understand the difference is that a Prelim year is specialized, i.e.- Internal Medicine, whereas a transitional year is more for people who still are unsure of what they want to go into, i.e.- incorporates several specialties throughout the year.

I believe you can mix and match specialties as you choose on the ROL. I recently heard of someone who wasn't sure if they wanted Rads or EM so they alternated programs throughout the ROL.

I hope this hasn't been asked before... anyway, here we go: which specialties have a PGY-1 separated from the other years?
    Thanks!
