CV gaps, what counts as one and how to avoid them?

    Advertisements

I am an FMG. I graduated first week of July 2018. My internship doesn't start until December or maybe even February depending on the placement. That's how it is in my country. So now I'll have a good 5-7 months gap in my CV. Is this considered a gap? Since I really don't have a choice in the matter... Will it be a disadvantage on my residency application? If it is then how can I avoid it? What can I do from now till December to bridge this gap? I need something light so I can focus on step 1.

You need to get any healthcare related job, preferably part time paid or volunteer work (eg. clinical research), if you need time to study for the USMLEs.

With any work gap, just tell the truth regarding your situation but keep it brief. Mention also you were preparing for the USMLE. That is also an acceptable explanation.

Since you just graduated from medical school, you never had a job to begin with. Employers and residency programs are more forgiving since you just came out of school.

Most gaps for graduating students are like 1-3 months on average by the time they obtain a job.
