How many programs is considered safe for me ?

    Advertisements

Hey guys, so i am in the process of applying to ERAS for internal medicine and i have been hearing a lot of mixed responses about how many programs i should apply.

    My credential
    Step 1: 257
    Step 2CK: 262
    CS pass first attempt
    Need j1 visa
    Carrib grad, graduating in 2015

have 5 publications, with 7-8 research experience. Other extracurricular activities too
have 3 LORs, one from program director whom i worked with and told me he would write me a good letter. The other 2 are faculty, not sure how the letters are.

At this point i have applied to 130 programs. Almost 65% university and 35% community. I have been told that i should apply to 170-200 programs since i need a j1 visa. Anyone who was in the match last year care to post how many programs they applied to and how many interviews they got ?

I am tight on money, and I am trying to see if I absolutely need to dish out more money, in that case i will do so, otherwise just wondering if 130 programs would land me 10 interviews or so.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

no i think you're good..if you get a 10% return (and you are likely to do so with those scores) thats 13…ideally you want 20 interviews (hence the 200 number with a 10% return).

the visa is very much an issue, but your scores are good and you have good ECs as well…

but do you have a LoR from the Chair (not the PD unless of course he is both or is a designated rep)…many programs, esp Uni programs want a an LoR from the Chair of Medicine.

The chair of medicine is on vacation this month, so i am anticipating him to write one next month. Would a late chairman letter hurt if its not in by september 15

You definitely don't need to with those stats. You have 5 pubs which is great and on top of that great step scores. Also you are applying straight out of med school so your only red flag is needing a visa. You'll do fine for sure.

I also want to add he was us citizen whch helped with more IV im sure
thanks, but being a US citizen is a huge advantage. If i can get half of that like 14-15 interviews, I should be fine. Interviews are generally not a problem for me

Merci for all the input guys.
