Plastic / reconstructive surgery residency in the UK

    Advertisements

    Hello everyone,

I am an Austrian medical student and I am very interested in a residency training in the UK (preferably London - I know, very competitive).
I have been googling since ages now and I can honestly say: I am confused and did not find a lot of helpful information.

With that said, I have a few questions that crave answers
    1) I would like to know how the process of applying as an EU-citizen in the UK works. What is required for a residency in this field?

    2) How high are my chances to get in? Is it really as impossible as everyone thinks?

    3) Which hospitals (!) provide residency program in reconstructive surgery (I would like to be in a hospital with more recontructive than aesthetic surgery but of course I know that they are combined in one field).

    4) What experience can you share during your foundation years and residency in plastic/reconstructive surgery?

    5) Since London or the UK in general is an expensive country to live in, how high can I estimate the salary?

    6) And very important too: Will it be 1 or 2 foundation years for Austrian students (since our last year of medschool is a socalled "clinical practical year"? I have heard that the german post-graduates have to go through only 1 FY instead of 2. Is that correct?)

Any help that pulls me out of all this chaos is highly appreciated since I could not find a single post on the internet about the exact same questions.
All the best and have a great day!

You are really having a hard time I suppose. You are carrying too many questions for yourself which implies you are really confused about how to do, aren't you? well, I think you need some experts help for your surgery residency personal statement. This is the one place where you can find all of your questions smart answers.

Ok first, in the UK you don't apply for residency yet. Its good news for you because unless you are a superstar you would never be able to get a plastics residency in London without doing training in the UK first.

You apply for foundation year 2 I believe if you already did a rotating internship in Austria. EU medical students generally do worse on the Situational Judgement Test than UK med students so you really need to study for that if you can. Basically you just need to apply to the foundation program. You should ask your school more about this process or ask others who have done the same. Once you get in, you'll do foundation year 2 and then after that apply for speciality training. I believe you first apply for core surgical training and then after 2 years of that you apply for plastics residency.

The jump from foundation to residency is difficult even for UK students and the jump from core surgical to plastics will likely be even harder.

Salary wise, in the NHS expect to follow the schematic so around 28k pounds base salary for FY2 with i think some allowance for living in London. And then you can do banding so if you are willing to work slightly more hours and at night you can get paid up to 50% more salary.

As a plastic surgeon ur base salary peaks at 100k pounds for consultant in the NHS, but you can do private and i'm sure a lot will do that in cosmetics for sure. So then the salary is probably much higher but idk how much.
