    Help, Failed CK

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I am not sure how to make matching happen for me. I just found out today that I failed CK. The CS score is still pending. I already have a history of a second attempt on my Step 1. I really would like to match into OB, but I'm not sure how that's going to happen now.

    Step 1: 206 (twice)
    Step CK: 193
    Step CS: Pending.
Other: 1 publication from undergrad. 1 waiting to be submitted for publication currently. US medical school.

I was doing alright on my diagnostic. They were 200+ at least. My adviser said I should try to take it in Nov and get the scores in for Dec. She isn't worried about me matching if I can get that passing score. She said it's the test taking skills not the knowledge base for me. I successfully passed all my clerkships and SHELFs so far. Currently I have three interviews already. What do I have to say for myself? A passing CK was what I had originally hoped to have to show.

... I'm just really confused as to what's the best next step. Take the year off? or Push through, and make it to match this year? If it can even happen at all.

the fact that you are at a US school will help...if you were an F/IMG, you would be toast for ob/gyn.
though if you are in a DO school, you will be better off applying to the AOA residency match than the ACGME one.

CK isn't as important to have for a US senior...in fact many don't take it until after match...hopefully you didn't do an automatic release of score and you have time to retake and have a hopefully passing score in time for interviews.

How do I know if I set my transcript for an automatic update? Looking at it now it said it was last updated Oct 21, but I had the impression that scores have to be updated by request.

My program is an MD program. How do I start studying for the exam again? It's the test taking anxiety more than anything I feel. Could I make it in 2/3 weeks time. It would be wonderful if I can score well vs just passing it.

Definately continue in the match process. Just remember what you did wrong on the test and improve upon those points for the next time you take it. I went to a Caribbean school and failed both Step I and II on the first try, but I did match anyway so don't give up. Especially if you're in a US MD program, a failed exam will not be weighed as heavily as with a Caribbean grad or DO. The biggest thing to remember is DON'T GIVE UP. If you want it, keep trying. Always use any setbacks as something to learn from, not as something to be discouraged from. This will be important throughout the match, residency, and when you're an attending. Trust me, I've been there, many of us on here have. Don't give up! 3 interviews means that you're still in this so regroup and retake the test.
