    Surgical residency advice

    Advertisements

    Hello,
I'm in my 3rd year (doing core rotations) and initially wanted to go into medicine however have become very interested in surgery. I messed up step 1 (226 1st attempted- I was essentially forced by my school to take it during AICM 5th semester and thus took it after 3 weeks of a break from studying). I know this probably isn't the place for WAMC or advice but is a 226 enough to get me IVs in low tier IMG friendly residency programs. I'm asking from those of you who are currently in the match or have previously matched surgery categorical. I have 1 research project going with an American SOM (sleep studies/sleep cycles). I will be cross referencing where people from Ross have previously matched and plan on doing better on step 2 (240ish)... if this is possible and I get great LORs from general surgeons (I have 1 already) would I get any interviews?
Thanks in advance, and the reason I am asking is because I need to start scheduling my electives and if those in the surgical field outright tell me I will only get preliminary IVs or none at all I will focus my electives on medicine.

Aim for 260s on Step 2. That being said, look at the averages for IMGs that match categorical gen surg...not that high. Apply across the nation and yes you will get interviews.

When my wife encountered some problems with health we had to search for a hospital somewhere and with help of this list I found it - http://www.whereorg.com/general-medi...cal-hospitals- maybe it is nit the best way to find a doctor, but it helped me a lot at that period.
