    advice needed urgently

    Advertisements

    hey guys,
can someone please advise me!!!!!!! I need to know the minimum number of family medicine programs I should apply to for 100% guarantee of residency in 2012.
    Stats:
Step 1: 200(82) passed on first attempt
Step 2ck: 200 (82) passed on first attempt
Step 2cs: passed on first attempt
Carribean Medical student / US citizen
So given these stats what are my chances for Internal Medicine?(not sure if I should apply to internal eventhough I prefer it over family)
I wana spend most of my money applying to family cuz i think i have a better shot at getting it cuz my scores are low
anyway im totally broke so I cant apply to many programs, so cud someone please tell me the least amount of programs I shud apply to in order to increase my chances of matching

    Hi Cooli,

I can understand your concern. While your scores are not "stellar", they are good, decent scores on 1st attempts. That being said, no one can guarantee anything in the world of medicine, and that includes applying to residency programs (I am sure you already know this, but reassurance is almost always needed in times of distress).

IMHO, I think you have a fair chance at securing an IM position. The key factor is going to be applying to the "right" programs. While AMGs have the liberty of choosing the "right" program that is fitting for them, as IMGs, we need to apply to the "right" programs that fit our stats. (We can argue about the ethics/morals/logistics of that all year, but that is not the scope of this thread).

I would recommend researching and that includes contacting programs, (quickly - like before Sep. 1st), and try to build a list of programs "you" qualify for. Now, if money is a factor, you may want to go the safer route and just apply broadly to FM programs. However, that is something you have to decide. Ultimately, it comes down to the dreaded choice, head or heart, or a combo of the two. You're a smart cookie though, and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Whatever the case, I hope you this helps, and good luck!

I'm in a similar boat to you, see the thread "Honest appraisal of my red flags." My stats are pretty similar to yours. Similar Step I score, pending CK score and I'm taking the CS in a few days.

I'm going to apply to a lot of IM programs and fewer FP. I think if you apply broadly and are willing to move anywhere, you have a decent shot at IM. Make sure you look for IMG friendly programs. It would be quite tough to land a top tier program but getting an IM spot somewhere is a realistic possibility.

I too would be okay with doing FP as a backup but my first choice would be IM so I think it's worth going for it in your case and mine.
