Step score cutoffs? (ie "what are my chances?")

    Advertisements

I'm working on my list of IM programs to apply to and some of them have score minimums they are looking for. It varies by program & most of the cutoffs are reasonable (ie >85). Unfortunately I did poorly on step 1 (200/82;1st attempt) & my score falls below many programs requirements. I did well on the CK (253/99;1st attempt) & passed CS (1st attempt). So my question is this: Is it worth applying to some of these places despite their cutoffs in hopes that my CK score redeems me as an applicant, or is it most likely that I will be filtered out or rejected before anyone ever sees my app?

well if a program have a cutoff stated then its m/l a filter they use and, for those places, they will never see your application because it will be filtered out.

that said, if there are particular programs that you really really want, call them...talk to the PC or even the PD if you can...let them know how much you really want to train at their program and see if they will pull your app to look at it...you will be surprise at how often this works...i've had many a PC say they like to see initiative and perserverance like that.

i started calling programs that i had not heard from by around Thanksgiving to check on my status and a few of the PC were willing to pull my application and give it to the PD...I called about 4-5 times over the course of the interview season to check on status and probably got about 3-5 extra interviews that way...

a piece of advice....your work is NOT done once you click the send button on your ERAS application...you have to be very very proactive during this time...call programs that you want interviews at, call programs that you haven't heard from, update them when your status changes in regards to step scores, etc....i have lots of stories about people who got interviews from programs this way, interviews at places that initally said no, and people who matched at programs because the called and kept in touch.
